More than 30 years ago I read a book titled “”The Fourth Horseman: A Short History of Epidemics, Plagues, Famine, and Other Scourges” (it is still on my bookshelf). In it, the author asks the reader to image a metaphorical creature called “the super organism” whose main job is to counter the unrestricted growth of of any species, including humans. It’s job is to always be cooking up a new disease while we will always be attempting to adapting. Of course, there is no such metaphorical beast, but continually new diseases from the biosphere are real. Now here are the two ways to win that fight: (1) naturally via evolution where a lot of people will naturally die (2) technologically with science guiding the creation of vaccines and possible, short term, cures.
