YouTuber Adam Mockler is sometimes over the top but a generally a good follow, and in this case discusses the significance of Gavin Newsom’s initiatives both in national issues, and in the global climate discussion at the COP meeting.
I think it demonstrates something about the value of stepping into a leadership vacuum, which Newsom, love or hate him, is doing.

“The best rises…”?
Seriously? Sounds like a Republican White House press secretary. Whoever Newsom’s advisors are who come up with the grand gestures—gay marriage, prop 50, taking over at the COP—are very good. It got him elected governor and now he’s running for pres. One important strategy for peaceful revolution is setting up parallel structures, bypassing the government being revolted against. But the sentences between these occasional punctuation marks are true blue, by which I mean straight oligarchic corporate neoliberal Democrat.
Can he rise above that? Maybe. Will he? Hell no, not unless people force him to, and if WE prevent fascism and Newsom’s or any other non-progressive Democrat gets any power, the outcome is almost inevitable. The us selectorate has proved over and over and over that after the worst crisis is averted they go back to sleep, oblivious as always to any real analysis of power dynamics or human psychology.
“Moderate” Democrats? No, radical right Republicans Lite.
The shutdown was an impossible situation. Democrats could never have won. Republicans were always going to be perfectly happy to allow all the parts of government that help people to remain shut down…forever, because that’s exactly what their plan is and has been all along. They ignore the law whenever they want, so can inject epinephrine into any part they want operating for a time, to get tax rebates for mbillionaires, military action, salary increases, drilling and mining permits…
The only way for Democrats to have won this was to adopt a progressive agenda years ago, not allow Citizens United or McCutcheon, not allow Glass-Steagall to be destroyed, counter the R’s rightward drive not with their own rightward tow-package passivity but with an equal and opposite move to the left, where the public has been all along. (Not so much now, maybe; after years of relentless, unanswered far right propaganda, many people are caving on many issues) and not let the fascists take over either the Republican Party or the country in the first place. But they’re oligarchs. They would have had to be replaced or forced to do that, with millions of watchful eyes like you’d need on sneaky children.
Prop 50 is a nice idea that’s a loser. Because of the Republicans have 3 or 4 times more gerrymander able districts than Democrats. Tariffs are not about charging people or countries. They’re about putting people at a disadvantage and leveraging that to get concessions.
Turning to AI for wisdom is an intellectually and morally bankrupt move. I deplore and dread the spread of this lazy abdickation.
Mockler started to talk about Democrats then didn’t. I had great hopes for AOC; she, Kucinich, the Squad, Bernie, Whitehouse, and others (Wellstone, Carnahan?), have been relentlessly sabotaged 👞 by both parties collaborating, and it alone is reason enough to remove them from power by whatever peaceful means are necessary and begin the truth and unreconcilable action to freeze the right out of politics for (25 years?) long enough to prevent fascism and ecological collapse. By terms of the T & R process they’ll all be in prison or will have agreed to not take any position of responsibility anyway. S
one need only look at what the DNC tried to do to Zohran Mamdani to keep him from being elected as NYC mayor to know they will do that to anyone they see as a threat to their center right complacency.
I have a deep aversion to any YouTube political talking head, left or right, so I won’t watch that, but yeah – Newsom. Uggh. We’re already being sold on the ‘moderate’ candidate 3 years ahead of the election. Cycle after cycle, don’t look at a true liberal, look at this ‘reasonable’ centrist instead.
The Democrats’ largest political problem is the corporatization of the party. It moved away from its leftist economic roots and towards the professional class, catering to billionaires and corporate powers, starting with the Clintons, and it can’t seem to break away from that tendency despite losing continuously in elections and dropping support from whole sectors of the electorate.
It should be clear by now that most Americans don’t trust the ‘glossy’ sophisticated candidate. They trust the guy/gal that seems like them – so much so that, as bizarre as it is, they voted for an obviously psychologically damaged silver-spooned carnival barker over the Democratic choice twice.
Maybe the Dems will learn? Not putting good odds on it, though.
Yes, absolutely. But it’s been going on since Ur, and I think the current round of power-grabbing and sadism started before the Democratic leadership got rid of VP Henry Wallace and replaced him with more centrist Truman, as both parties began to dismantle the New Deal. There have been fitful attempts since then to move left—Johnson’s Great Society, the Clinton’s half-assed health care, Obama’s legacy shopping at the end of his 2 terms (after being sold to the voters for years, including at the 2004 convention)after wasting 7 years ignoring the issue and pushing all-of-the-above, Newsom’s splashy moves while ruling from the right.
They’re always either confused or trying to make deals, pandering to Democratic voters, oligarchic overlords, and the far right all at the same time. Clearly neoliberal or worse sentiments in all the foundational things that determine the course of the empire—banking and financial, military, election, and other policies… Is the rest salving their consciences or trying to hoodwink voters not already captured by the Republicans’ racism and other phobias.
“I have a deep aversion to any YouTube political talking head, left or right, so I won’t watch that”
I definitely get that.
In this case, he seems to be just a young, savvy, observant person. I didn’t find it too painful. 😉
