I don’t know offhand how the ecological or social justice footprints of cadmium telluride sourcing compares to crystalline silicon, or whether recycling is more or less problematic, but cadmium is pretty nasty to work with. (Paradoxically, the most common non-professional exposure comes from inhalation of fossil fuel combustion products.)
