Reader John O’Neil helpfully brought up the shibboleth “Solar panels only last 15 years”, which reminded me of a portion of my conversation with Heather Mirletz, a researcher who has done some of the most comprehensive recent research on solar panel longevity and reliability.
Turns out the “15 year” meme comes from some date that’s, well, outdated.

re longevity, Beznau 1 in Switzerland is 54 years old, and with its similarly aged sister plant provides about 10% of that country’s electricity, with a capacity factor of 91.8%, plus district heating to about 18,000 people in the Aare valley. Nine Mile Point in New York State, a boiling water reactor, is nearly as old, and still chugging along. Plant annual output gradually increased by ~15% from 2000 to 2022, possibly from shorter refuelling stops.
