The local weather man (WWL or WDSU) was warning people that they might not hear the tornado coming, which seemed bizarre to us. Sure enough, though, one of the survivors in St. Bernard said his family didn’t hear it coming, but the dog stiffened up and he had everyone get in the tub and “hold the pipes”. (He had grown up in the Midwest where they had basements, but there is nothing similar in an area which is borderline swamp.)
