Latest Use of AI: Climate Denial

New AI written climate denial paper making the rounds.

Hallucinating and plagiarizing garbage from Willie Soon of all people.
“Large language models do not have the ability to reason” – one expert said. In that regard, they have much in common with science deniers.

France24:

Climate change deniers are pushing an AI-generated paper questioning human-induced warming, leading experts to warn against the rise of research that is inherently flawed but marketed as neutral and scrupulously logical.

The paper rejects climate models on human-induced global warming and has been widely cited on social media as being the first “peer-reviewed” research led by artificial intelligence (AI) on the topic.

Titled “A Critical Reassessment of the Anthropogenic CO2-Global Warming Hypothesis,” it contains references contested by the scientific community, according to experts interviewed by AFP.

Computational and ethics researchers also cautioned against claims of neutrality in papers that use AI as an author.

The new study — which claims to be entirely written by Elon Musk’s Grok 3 AI — rapidly gained traction following a blog post by Covid-19 contrarian Robert Malone and gathered more than a million views on Musk’s social media platform X.

Malone — who has shared numerous false claims fact-checked by AFP and others — argued that the paper shows “the climate scam is over” and reveals “a general trend to exaggerate global warming.”

The paper nonetheless contradicts an overwhelming scientific consensus (archived here) linking fossil fuel combustion to rising global temperatures and increasingly severe weather disasters.

Trump’s Water War on Canada

It’s about greed. It’s about resources. It’s about the Oligarch’s thirst for control of water.

New York Times:

Mr. Trump and Mr. Trudeau spoke twice on Feb. 3, once in the morning and again in the afternoon, as part of discussions to stave off tariffs on Canadian exports.

But those early February calls were not just about tariffs.

Mr. Trump also mentioned revisiting the sharing of lakes and rivers between the two nations, which is regulated by a number of treaties, a topic he’s expressed interest about in the past.

Canadian officials took Mr. Trump’s comments seriously, not least because he had already publicly said he wanted to bring Canada to its knees. In a news conference on Jan. 7, before being inaugurated, Mr. Trump, responding to a question by a New York Times reporter about whether he was planning to use military force to annex Canada, said he planned to use “economic force.”

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

During the second Feb. 3 call, Mr. Trudeau secured a one-month postponement of those tariffs.

This week, the U.S. tariffs came into effect without a fresh reprieve on Tuesday. Canada, in return, imposed its own tariffs on U.S. exports, plunging the two nations into a trade war. (On Thursday, Mr. Trump granted Canada a monthlong suspension on most of the tariffs.)

“Crazy Times Here” – Historic Ice Storm Paralyzes Northern Michigan

In Northern Michigan, an historic ice storm closed the Mackinac Bridge, as massive ice build up fell from towers, above, and exploded like bombs on the roadway below.

I’ve seen a lot of ice storms but nothing ever like this. Michigan has mostly escaped the worst of the worst impacts so far, but events like this are reminders that no place is completely safe from climate extremes.

The ice build up on branches and structures is more extreme than I can ever remember seeing.

Amateur YouTuber below has some eye-opening footage.
