Should Taxpayers Restore Beaches for Billionaires?

Well, when you put it that way, the answer is no.
But on the other hand, doing nothing can have negative impacts further inland.
But on the other hand, we’re going to have so many impacts from climate change that this money could be better spent on other priorities.
On the other hand, climate change is going to require massive triage, and a lot of really important things are simply going to have to be sacrificed.

  1. Making it beach makes it pretty, but it is readily washed away. Note that Wrightsville Beach and Long Beach (NY) are both barrier islands. In terms of protecting property, you only have to put riprap or other storm-resilient material out there, but tourism business owners would have a sad because they want a beach. It was easy to hand-wave how important this project was (with no numbers), and that was all the rationalization he needed to argue for spending Other People’s Money.
