UPDATE: Tropical Storm Lee Soon to Be Major Hurricane. Track Uncertain.

The Eyewall:

What’s changed since yesterday?

Invest 95L became Tropical Depression 13 briefly, and then it became Tropical Storm Lee yesterday afternoon. It is organizing and tracking west-northwest. Confidence that it will miss a direct impact on the islands is increasing. Confidence on anything beyond there is low.

Lee’s intensity

Lee is in a tremendously ideal environment for intensification. It has deep warm water, low shear, and plenty of moist air in the neighborhood for the next 5 or 6 days. Models have suggested since last week that this would go to the moon intensity-wise, and there’s no reason to doubt that today. The NHC forecast for Lee was one of its most aggressive on record, taking it to a category 4 storm by Sunday or Monday, something they will not commit to without confidence.

Developing Hurricane Lee’s Path “Increasingly Uncertain”

Washington Post:

A newly classified tropical depression located midway between Africa and South America is set to become the season’s next major hurricane, organizing and intensifying markedly in the coming days as it churns west toward the Bahamas and Caribbean. As it draws closer to North America, its path is highly uncertain.

But forecasters are unusually confident that the storm will become extremely intense — raising the stakes of the track forecast. The National Hurricane Center predicts the depression will quickly become a tropical storm by Tuesday evening, earning the name Lee, before explosively strengthening into a Category 4 hurricane by Saturday.

Naturally, the concern arises for any possible effects on land. Current projections suggest the storm could come perilously close to the northern Leeward Islands — the island chain that divides the Atlantic and Caribbean — before it turns northward out to sea.

Per the Washington Post: Tropical Depression 13 has formed and is forecast to explosively intensify to a Cat 4 hurricane by the weekend. It will be named Lee. Path beyond 3-4 days grows increasingly uncertain.”

Greeced Lightning: Storms Could be Historic in Greece

Mika Rantenen of the Finnish Meteorological Institute posted this image of a Jetstream pattern known as an “Omega Block” over southern Europe.

We’ve been watching insane rain over Spain in recent days, now it looks like it’s Greece’s turn, as part of the same system – and the model runs on this are horrific, if they play out.

Reuters:

Torrential rains have flooded homes and roads in Greece and a man died after a wall collapsed in the bad weather, the fire brigade said on Tuesday.

Storm Daniel has battered western and central Greece since Monday, prompting hundreds of calls to emergency services to pump out water just days after a deadly wildfire which has burned for more than two weeks was brought under control in the north of the country.

“The man died after a wall collapsed near Volos city, probably due to bad weather,” a fire brigade official told Reuters, without providing more details.

According to the Athens News Agency, the wall collapsed when the man, a cattle breeder, was trying to reach his animals.

Footage from state broadcaster ERT showed cars in Volos, a port city on the Pagasetic Gulf, washed away by torrential rain onto muddy shores.

MTG on Alex Jones: God Punished Burning Man, something something, Climate Brainwashing, something something

Beyond Jewish Space Lasers – Alex Jones is the proper venue to roll out a new Conspiracy Theory.

MTG has latest scoop in Burning Man, God’s Vengeance on pagan enviros, and a global conspiracy of unspecified evil globalist master-minds using the Burning Man fiasco, apparently to brainwash hapless hippies, techno-pagans and Silicon Valley Billionaires on climate change….

Meidas Touch:

Marge Greene went on Alex Jones’s Info Wars show on Sunday night to launch a new conspiracy.

She claims that what is happening at Burning Man with people trapped by flood is a plot by the Deep State to force 75,000 people into one place to brainwash them on climate change.

She also said the tornadoes and flooding were sent by God to punish them for the mock sacrifice they supposedly performed.

She says that now when all the attendees go home, they will spread climate change propaganda.

Meanwhile, CNN has latest video of mass exodus from festival site.

UPDATE: Below, more of the usual suspects jumping in.

Climate Extremes Linked to Child and Forced Marriage

It’s all connected.

Above, the “Down to Earth” video series is produced in New Delhi, and generally features accurate and well researched reporting of stories that may not make the cut in western media.

Ohio State University:

Among the negative impacts of extreme weather events around the world is one that most people may not think of: an increase in child marriages.

Researchers at The Ohio State University conducted a systematic review of 20 studies connecting droughts, floods and other extreme weather events to increases in child, early and forced marriages in low- and middle-income countries.

Overall, the studies provide compelling evidence of the problem, said Fiona Doherty, lead author of the study and a doctoral candidate in social work at Ohio State.

It’s not that extreme weather has a direct effect on child marriages, Doherty said.

“What these disasters do is exacerbate existing problems of gender inequality and poverty that lead families to child marriage as a coping mechanism,” she said.

The study was published recently in the journal International Social Work.

Globally, one in five girls is married before the age of 18, and in lower- and middle-income countries that number rises to 40%.

Those numbers may grow as climate change increases the frequency of extreme weather events around the world, said study co-author Smitha Rao, assistant professor of social work at Ohio State.

“The complexities surrounding child marriage and extreme weather will worsen amid climate change,” Rao said.

The researchers examined 20 studies published between 1990 and 2022 that examined how extreme weather was related to marriages involving children, mostly girls, who were below the age of 18.  Most of the studies were done in low- and middle-income countries in Asia and Africa, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Kenya, Nepal and Vietnam.

Droughts and floods were the most common disasters, but other studies looked at the impact of cyclones and high temperature shocks, among other weather events.

The studies revealed the impacts of disasters on child marriage in a variety of contexts, Doherty said.

One study in Bangladesh found that in years with heat waves lasting more than 30 days, 11- to 14-year-old girls were 50% more likely to marry and girls aged 15-17 were 30% more likely.

A major reason is simply economics.

“Child marriage is often seen as a coping strategy to reduce economic vulnerability and food insecurity that a family is facing because of a disaster,” Doherty said.

For example, one study found that daughters were married early in Bangladesh after Cyclone Aila to curtail the economic and food burden on households.

Early marriage was also sometimes encouraged to provide needed workers for families.

When a drought threatened water sources and livestock in Kenya, one study found that young brides were sought to help with increased labor demands, such as walking long distances to find food and water.

Regional customs such as bride price and dowry were found to be key factors in the link between child marriage and extreme weather.
