“Smelling and Tasting” Smoke in the Heartland

Until this summer, midwesterners have been largely content to gaze in wonder at the extreme air pollution events on the west coast, the southwest, and the Pacific Northwest. Tsk, Tsk.

After a jarring bout of foul smokey air a few weeks ago, the pall has returned with stunning effect.

Below, the Mackinac Bridge, at the Northern Tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, is more than 400 miles north of Chicago, and generally considered the Gateway to “God’s Country”, for midwesterners.

  1. It will be interesting to see if this newest round of extreme weather will move the needle even further toward action on climate change. The majority of Americans already want action, but they aren’t represented by the majority of politicians. Vote like your life depends on it.
