Grumpy Old Men – Climate Denial’s Shriveled Face

If you don’t follow software wizard Kevin Pluck on Twitter, you are missing some of the clearest and most innovative climate graphics anywhere.
Kevin got disgusted with a video from the climate-denying Heartland Institute, and deconstructed it, above – which made me think of..

Below, example of one of Kev’s more successful viral animations.

  1. The animation of global sea ice area is nice but it does NOT give a true picture of what’s important. There will always be ice at both poles, but the area or extent is not as important as the fact that it’s getting way thinner and losing volume in the Arctic, the area of the globe that is warming the most. The Death Spiral graphic is the one that needs to go viral, but it has only 4+K views. Watch it and be scared, very scared.

      1. Yes, Andy Lee’s depiction is a good one, too (and his music is nicer). The Death Spiral is IMO superior because it has the advantage of showing the month-by-month change and leaves a better total “image” of the overall decline than a red line on a graph—-if you “uncoiled” the spiral, it would make a graph several feet long.

One thing I like about Andy’s is that it is superimposed on a map of the NYC area and I can pick out my hometown inNJ

  2. PS The smugness of the Six Cranks as they sit there and tell their lies is disgusting—-makes this Grumpy Old Man want to slap them silly. (And thanks for the Ann-Margret in her prime)

  3. Well that’s handy because 1922 is the only year that’s missing from the 1920-39 August Arctic sea ice extent Danish maps I downloaded a few years back. Spitzbergen is where the warm Atlantic Ocean water intruding makes a turn both east & west of it, though apparently some warm water continues as far as that long Russian island. The water entering Bering Strait must be Pacific Ocean surface water running down hill and the cycle has increased 8% but I rough computed that extra heat is too minor to consider (it’s 8% of 0.9 Sv)
