Observers asking if the sea ice has reached its annual minimum – which would be slightly earlier than usual. More info needed. Stay tuned.
In any case, I’ll be working on a video explaining why this year was so interesting.

Reblogged this on AGR Daily News Service.
Minimum extent already? Thought we’d get another week of melting.
Will be interesting to see how this year ranks for area & volume.
not a lock yet. no announcement to my knowledge.
Dont forget about Tamino’s latest graph(s). In terms of annual average extent, 2016 is a new record minimum.

Eyeballing the two maps, it looks like there was still some decrease in extent between 9/10 and 9/11 (if the blue represents “debris” ice) in the areas nearest Svaalbard and the Canadian Archipelago. There looks to be an increase in ice extent in the tongue of open water that reached closest to the north pole, which is where we’d expect refreezing to begin first. If we haven’t reached minimum yet, it’s awful close.
