Talking Points Memo:

Despite a debate in which Fox moderators repeatedly attacked him and three days of hostile press coverage which came after it, Donald Trump remains in a commanding lead in the race for the Republican nomination, according to a poll released Sunday evening by NBC News. The results confound weekend press coverage suggesting Trump’s campaign was foundering.

The online poll was conducted by the Analytics Unit of NBC News and the University of Pennsylvania’s Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies over a 24 hour period from Friday evening into Saturday, thus coming entirely after the debate on Thursday evening.

According to poll, Trump has the support of 23% of Republican voters, followed by Ted Cruz with 13%, Ben Carson with 11%, Marco Rubio and Carly Fiorina tied at 8% and Jeb Bush and Scott Walker at 7%. The poll showed Trump essentially unchanged from a poll taken one week ago in which he garnered 22% support.

Numerous commentators speculated over the weekend that Trump’s public spat with Fox News host Megyn Kelly might finally spell the end of his surge in the polls. Top Republicans openly cheered his apparent downfall. But NBC’s weekend poll suggests that assumption was misplaced.

  1. I thought the Republicans could not possibly descend any lower in my estimation. Yet in the immortal words of Indiana Jones – “Well I was wrong!”. This Crock post, and the earlier one showing that conservatives don’t understand that Stephen Colbert is not one of them, has me speechless. What the hell happened? Lead poisoning? Flouridated water? These people control our Congress, both houses. This has gone from the ridiculous, to the insane, and into an intellectual Black Hole from which zero.zero illumination can ever emerge.

  2. Republicans might be supporting Donald Trump, but I bet Democrats are supporting him a hell of a lot more – especially Hillary Clinton. Trump is completely unelectable for President, and the longer he stays in the race the easier it will be for Clinton.

To be frank, I’m pretty sure he is just trolling and isn’t serious about running. Either that, or he is the greatest moron to walk the face of the planet. But then again, maybe it is the latter……..

  3. Never, ever EVER underestimate the fascist (in the exact polisci definition of the term) ,authoritarian streak running through way, way,WAY too many of your average American citizens (my parsing of the logic of “Some x are y.””) It is a very real danger of our failing to learn the lesson of way too many observers of Weimar Germany (hell, many, many years into Nazi Germany) who dismissed Hitler as nothing but a buffoon that no one could take seriously.

    1. Trump as Hitler? WOW! And his style is reminiscent of Mussolini’s also—bombast and bullshit! And both of them were egomaniacs that destroyed their countries once they took control. Yes, definite parallels there.

We ARE in danger of becoming a corporate fascist state, and who better to lead us than a corporate fascist? Those “way too many Americans with an authoritarian streak” are the Republican “base”, and they love him.

Read Mooney’s The Republican Brain to understand them better.

  4. To Whomever made that ‘Trump Tweets’ video: Putting Trumps tweets to Mozart? We all know about the decline of Western Civilization, but you don’t have to rub our noses in it.
