Comes the apocalypse, they can line up in their millions and pray to god the way many others facing doom have done in the past. Maybe it’ll work this time. (BTW, which god is really running things?)
“China’s major religions are ESSENTIALLY non-theistic”?
What does that mean? No temples, no praying, no priests, no set of “rules” to live by?
IMO, all religions are “essentially” human constructs and are really devoted to “human worship”. Solipsism, existentialism, materialism, or BS over a beer at the corner bar—-it’s all the same—-we as a species have evolved to the point that we have a brain that has allowed us to develop technologies that are out of control and destroying the planet, at the same time giving us both the need and the spare time to contemplate “meaning”. We simply need to keep our brains occupied, and one of the ways we have done that is by inventing “religions” that help us deny reality.
I spent the day yesterday raking up the last of the leaves. Why? I have been composting my leaves and yard waste for over 40 years. Why? After the recent snows in Buffalo, much effort was spent plowing snow. Why? Before man became civilized, leaves and snow were taken care of by “nature”. About 4000 people have climbed Mount Everest and 250 have died trying. Why?
(And even though he is now in disgrace, that great philosopher Cosby asked the biggest one of all—-“Why is there air”?. The answer is NOT “for humans to breathe”).

It means they are not god centric. Belief in god or gods is not an essential pre-requisite of the major Chinese religions. They are unashamedly both human-centric and naturalistic in a mutually dependent cosmos. These characteristics pretty much define environmentalism.
Another general difference is the focus in the west on strict adherence and unquestioning belief in doctrine and dogma, and subsequent dictatorial and strictly deontological moral rules, whereas eastern religions’ focus is on encouraging voluntary spiritual practice. Practice with the intention of attaining greater personal appreciation and subtle understanding of moral behavior and realizing its genuine benefits (Karma) through cultivating mindfulness and harvesting its fruits; generosity, compassion and equanimity.
Seriously, given what happened for the Big Leap Forward, Communist China will likely go down the drain first, as there’s nothing preventing a future dumb government from taking very dumb decisions and sticking to them in a dire situation
Speaking of Bush and his enlightened policies, do you think the UK government will ever decide that Omno is a denier terrorist, take him into custody, and start waterboarding him? Would that shut him up?
Since his utterances are apparently broadcast from his nether orifice, not likely.

Didn’t think about that. So, they’d just have to waterboard the other end as well, and THAT would shut him up? Actually, that’s all quite appropriate, since so many of Omno’s “utterances” DO come under the heading of “farts in church”.
