Climate Denier Rick Santorum: “We Will Never Have Smart People on Our Side”

If you ever were looking for evidence of just how far thru the looking glass we’ve come – see this clip from climate denier Rick Santorum. (see below)

“Smart People”, I guess, join Muslims, blacks, latinos, gays, women, union people, environmentalists, and scientists as being, sadly, ineligible for the republican party, at best, and at worst, members of a sinister global conspiracy – presumably aimed at “dumb people”.

  1. Anyone who believes, like Santorum, that little ole humans can’t impact the planet and climate in a meaningful way, should go to YouTube, and watch the movie called “Home” 90 minutes – well done

Hundreds of variables go into climate change. And Santorum doesn’t understand anything about any of them.

Frightening to think this guy was actually considered a candidate for president.

  2. Santorum says he doesn’t trust the National Academy of Science.

9 out of 10 leading skeptical climate scientists are linked to Exxon

The Carbon Brief (TCB) has a nice analysis on the not-very-startling coincidence that at least nine of the top 10 ‘skeptical’ ‘scientists’ who are publishing on climate change have direct links to Exxon.

    But Santorum trusts them.

    ——-
And obviously all these groups must be in on the “hoax”.

Over 100 professional science organizations, of international and national standing, have issued statements as to the validity of AGW and that we must act immediately.

This includes every national academy of science in the world.

The U.S. National Academy of Science has issued four such statements.

The prestigious science journal, Nature, has openly criticized the GOP for it’s anti science stance, especially on climate change.

  3. Santorum claims – no evidence for AGW

10 independent lines of empirical evidence

Observed fingerprints of enhanced greenhouse effect warming, just as the science predicted.
    including:

    polar amplification

    nights warming more than days

    winters warming more than nights

warming of the troposphere and cooling of the stratosphere

Those fingerprints are all things that the science predicted and that are now being observed

If the Sun was causing the warming, days would warm faster than nights. Summers would warm faster than winters. The tropics would warm more than the poles. And both layers of the atmosphere would be warming.

  4. Climate Models
I’m sure Santorum thinks they are voodoo

(comment by john byatt – at Watching the Deniers blog)

“Are the models, in fact, untestable? Are they unable to make valid predictions? Let’s review the record.

Global Climate Models have successfully predicted:

That the globe would warm, and about how fast, and about how much.

That the troposphere would warm and the stratosphere would cool.

That nighttime temperatures would increase more than daytime temperatures.

That winter temperatures would increase more than summer temperatures.

Polar amplification (greater temperature increase as you move toward the poles).

That the Arctic would warm faster than the Antarctic.

The magnitude (0.3 K) and duration (two years) of the cooling from the Mt. Pinatubo eruption.

They made a retrodiction for Last Glacial Maximum
sea surface temperatures which was inconsistent with
the paleo evidence, and better paleo evidence showed the models were right.

They predicted a trend significantly different and differently signed from UAH satellite temperatures, and then a bug was found in the satellite data.

The amount of water vapor feedback due to ENSO.

The response of southern ocean winds to the ozone hole.

The expansion of the Hadley cells.

The poleward movement of storm tracks.

The rising of the tropopause and the effective radiating altitude.

The clear sky super greenhouse effect from increased water vapor in the tropics.

The near constancy of relative humidity on global average.

That coastal upwelling of ocean water would increase.

Seventeen correct predictions? Looks like a pretty good track record to me.”

    1. Yeah, but other than than correct predictions, what good are they? 😉

In the second video, notice how cranky, agitated, loud and defensive Santorum gets at about the 4 min. mark. That was totally uncalled for considering the polite approach of the interviewer. My guess is that he was realizing that his position was indefensible, and went on the offense instead…the true mark of a bully and ideologue.

  5. Astounding levels of Dunning Kruger effect on show every time Santorum opens his mouth. However, the words and phrases that he repeatedly uses (whilst trying to sound like he knows what he’s talking about) just demonstrate that he knows nothing other than what he has been taught to say… However, here is the bottom line: It is one thing to say “I don’t accept the evidence”; but to say “There is no evidence” is just ridiculous.

It is a shame Santorum did not win the GOP nomination for POTUS. He would have been far more effective at losing the election and bringing the GOP’s denial of science to an end. Romney is much more of a charlatan and talks in riddles (and changes his mind)… he is much more likely to get in under the radar (despite the fact the majority of US voters now accept climate change is a problem that can no longer be ignored).

My greatest regret of all is that people do not get the government or president they elect; they get the one they deserve and, if people can be fooled by a schmuck like Romney then, the USA and the World is in deep trouble.

  6. Say, where did the comment from omnologos go?
I see it in my e-mail but it’s not on this page

“Morinmoss, the op-ed pages of the IHT (the international edition of the NYT) have been plastered since January ………”

    1. Morin,

Don’t get your knickers in a twist. Once the comments reach a certain number, a second page is created. Click on “Older Comments” and you’ll find the IHT item.

      1. Thanks, Ray.

I guess I’m still used to the scrolling-forever pages like Tonyboy’s.

I did click the Reply button and I expected that the comment would be immediately above.

Since I’ve just gotten in from a long day, I’m still in commute haze.

By the way, as I’m now in my usual netsurfing evening wear, I regret that I presently have no knickers to (un)twist. 😉

        1. Re: “I did click the Reply button and I expected that the comment would be immediately above.”

I’ve had the same occur here. It’s a Word Press “feature”. And a user annoyance.

But, still it’s a pretty workable system compared to some I’ve endured.
