Summer 2012 Set to Turn up Heat – NOAA

It’s been the year without a winter. Doesn’t look like we’ll miss out on summer, tho.
CBS managed the whole story without the phrase “climate change”.

For more, Climate Progress has an informative post by Jeff Masters on the end of La Nina, and potential for a new el nino this summer.

  1. The UK has been plagued by incorrect Met Office summer forecasts for several years in a row. And whatever they say is usually too safe to be any useful (such as in forecasting a cold winter 40%, normal 30% and warm 30%, with overlapping intervals making it all similar to 33%, 33%, 33%).

So what will constitute a “warm summer” and where? What temperatures will be considered “normal”, “cold” or “hot”? How many records will be broken and how many are broken any year anyway?

I also imagine that a cold summer, whatever “cold” means, will be taken as evidence of “weird weather”. So…what is exactly “normal weather” and under what ranges will the various indicator have to fall for the weather to be considered normal?

And how many indicators will have to fall out of the “normal” range for truly weird weather to have happened?

Otherwise it’s no better than reading Nostradamus, forever “correct” after the fact. References to a hot Munich or Poland do sound climatologically silly.

    1. Gosh! What a lot of questions! And answers in such short supply! Is it possible that ‘doubt is your product’? Whatever: these issues aren’t exactly academic to Texas ranchers or homeowners in Arizona. At least, not anymore. So, we’ll leave it to the experts as we’re pressed for time. We promise to address your concerns just after the ‘Magnum P.I.’ marathon is over.

    2. What has this video got to do with the MET Office?

“I also imagine that a cold summer, whatever “cold” means, will be taken as evidence of “weird weather”.”

Of course it would. What you have failed to grasp is that ‘Hot’ or ‘Cold’ weather is occurring against an overasll background of Global Warming. On balance there are and continues to be more ‘hot’ records broken than cold ones because of this.

  2. As usual, omnologos appears to be overlooking what is actually already happening (i.e. unusually early wild fires) and sensible explanations for it (i.e. dry winter, dry soil, warm ground, more LW radiation); choosing instead to regurgitate facile criticism of previous attempts at predicting weather (as opposed to climate).

However, I have a possible excuse for the failure of CBS to use “contentious” phrases such as “climate change”. Unless they are in the habit of actually peddling denialist memes, is it not possible that this “omission” was deliberate?

Either way, I think it is probably good for News media to just report the news – rather than telling people what to think.

  3. AGW is real! Media is not offered, about cumulative human stewardship, since the industrial revolution. Worse cyclonic storms and rising seas can wreck the human habitat, but CO2-ACIDIFICATION threatens plankton, eggs, little fish, oysters, and the entire oceanic food chain.

Feel your eyes sting? That is CARBONIC ACID, which we must reduce, by immediate re-greening of all areas, and hit ‘Ford, Diesel, hemp.’ Read. Politicians prevent CO2-neutral biomass.+ hemp, until DIE-OFFS happen. NOW!
