NOAA’s State of the Climate is a good place to check back on from time to time, as they post monthly, as well annual data, in friendly, readable form.
Per NOAA:
Warmer-than-average temperatures occurred during 2010 for most of the world’s surface. The warmest annual above-average temperatures occurred throughout the high latitude regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Canada, Alaska, the lower North Atlantic Ocean, the Middle East, eastern Europe, and northern Africa. Temperatures were notably cooler across the Southern oceans, most of the eastern Pacific Ocean, western Scandinavia, part of central Russia, and parts of Australia.
Note, red dots are warm ANOMALIES, blue dots are cold ANOMALIES – not indications of absolute temp. It means, “Was it warmer, or cooler, for the year, as compared to the average for 1971 – 2000? The continued polar amplification is obvious, but most of the planet seemed to be visibly warmer, in spite of the cooling la nina, which is visible in the blue area off the west coast of South America.
Melting Siberian permafrost is the slow motion Time bomb of climate change.
This is a Greenpeace film, which raisese hackles for some – but no matter how you feel about Greenpeace, the message in this video is an important one, and the pictures from a remote part of the planet deserve to be seen and absorbed.
Ok, go figure.
The number one thing people were interested in after watching this week’s video, judging by comments, was, “What was that SONG?”
Unfortunately, I didn’t have the link at first, because I lost track of it. Now I’ve found it, and although the name is of course, unpronounceable, it’s in the video description.

President Obama has taken a lot of heat for not pushing through climate legislation during the last congressional term. I certainly share that frustration, but I don’t hold the President responsible so much as the radical anti-science wing of the Republican party, the Fox News/Talk Radio snake pit, and the chorus of disinformation on the internet that this video series is meant to counter.
On Thursday, the President made clear again his commitment to climate action, and understanding of the issue, during a speech at Penn State University. It’s significant that talk show pundits are calling this day the opening shot of his run for re-election in 2012. I hope this will be an indication that he is renewing his call for a national effort on the issue.
Many parts of the Texas experienced rolling blackouts in the past week, coinciding with unusually cold temperatures across many parts of the state. Millions of customers statewide appear to have been affected.
Texas Wind power made a critical difference in keeping the lights on for many customers.

Southern, third world countries are bearing the brunt of the early stages of climate change. Westerners are conditioned to think in terms of how many more bags of wheat or aid money to send.
When that country is nuclear armed, the calculus is quite different. Climate change threatens to destablize already-fragile areas of the world, with unpredictable results.
“No particular weather event can be attributed to Climate Change”
Just like, we don’t know which cigarette finally tipped your metabolism into Cancer or a Heart Attack. But sooner or later, you do start to notice that hacking cough, the raspy voice, the shortness of breath. It’s a slow killer, but a sharp nurse or doctor can tell as soon as you open your mouth that you’re a long time smoker. By that time, damage is done.
But if you stop, recovery is possible.
It’s a metaphor.
Also an excuse to run some cool pictures of extreme weather from up over and down under. But now, a new bar has been set.
