ARkStorm

ARkStorm. I had not heard this word before today. Here’s what the USGS says:

The USGS Multi Hazards Demonstration Project (MHDP)’s second full scenario, called ARkStorm, addresses massive U.S. West Coast storms analogous to those that devastated California in 1861–62. Storms of this magnitude are projected to become more frequent and intense as a result of climate change.

Silicon Valley’s New Hot Sector: Clean Tech

The Business Roundtable says:

Increasing energy efficiency can be one of the cheapest and most immediate ways of improving our energy security, reducing energy costs and curtailing greenhouse gas emissions. Business Roundtable members have committed to aggressive energy efficiency programs and recognize the important role of energy savings in improving the bottom line. We encourage the development of policies that promote significant energy efficiency increases in our residential and commercial buildings and encourage improvements in the efficiency in industrial processes.

So Business Roundtable is part of the creeping socialist New World Order socialist agenda – who knew?

New Crock Video: What the Ice Cores Tell Us

Judging from comments I get on the YouTube site, many deniers apparently believe that not too long ago, Greenland was green.  Like, really green.

In fact, Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson gave voice to Tea Party science when he told an interviewer, “There’s a reason Greenland was called Greenland,” he said. “It was actually green at one point in time. And it’s been, since, it’s a whole lot whiter now.”

But to  find a greenland without glaciers and an ice sheet, you have to go back a little further in time, 65 million years ago, when reptiles swam and hunted there.

The more recent past was less idyllic.  Ice core data indicates the the greenland ice sheet is at least 400,000 years old.

Google Earth: Is Negative Arctic Oscillation the New Normal?

Click for Larger Image

I enhanced this image from Google Earth via  NASA (Posted January 26, 2011).

Readers may remember Dr. Jeff Master’s message from the American Geophysical Union meeting back in December. Scientists are now asking if reduced ice cover in the arctic may make winters like this one more common.

Per NASA Image of the Day: Arctic Oscillation Chills North America, Warms Arctic

Snow fell in the U.S. Deep South, severe storms battered the East Coast, and International Falls, Minnesota, set a new temperature record: -46 degrees Fahrenheit (-43 degrees Celsius) on January 21. But in areas north of the United States and southern Canada, temperatures were above normal. In fact, unusual warmth forced residents of Iqaluit, capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut, to cancel their New Year’s snowmobile parade.

This map of the United States, Canada, eastern Siberia, and Greenland shows temperature anomalies for January 9 to 16, 2011, compared to the same dates from 2003 through 2010. The anomalies are based on land surface temperatures observed by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite. Areas with above-average temperatures appear in red and orange, and areas with below-average temperatures appear in shades of blue. Oceans, lakes, and areas with insufficient data (usually because of persistent clouds) appear in gray.

Graph of the Day: Satellite Temperature Records

From Ben Santer, whose epic beatdown of Climate disinformer Pat Michaels was a highpoint of last year’s congressional hearings on climate change.

Santer was responding to a quote from  Dr Roy Spencer, in regard to the current extreme winter weather.  Dr. Spencer is “the official climatologist of the Rush Limbaugh show”.

Building the New Detroit: The Green Garage

As I’ve noted here before, Detroit Lives.

The Green Garage in Detroit will serve as a green business incubator.

Visible from Second Ave. the new three-season room, will have windows that fully open and walls and  floor made from reclaimed bricks.  All new windows, made by Detroit-based Kelly Windows, are triple-pane, made from sustainable wood and low-VOC. (Volatile organic compounds)

Solatubes installed in the ceiling provide daylighting. Old drywall is used as a thermal mass between the subfloor and flooring, providing added insulation where radiant heating tubes will distribute heat.

Solar thermal collectors are in, but not yet operational. Earth Day is targeted for the grand opening of the Green Garage.

According to the website:

The Green Garage is actually 3 things: a building located in the Midtown area of Detroit, a business enterprise, and a community of people dedicated to Detroit’s sustainable future.

“The Skeptics”: Monckton Tries to Block BBC Broadcast of Investigative Film.

http://vimeo.com/15370110

According to John Abraham, “..this deserves wide attention.”

The ever litigious “Lord” Christopher  Monckton attempted to block BBC’s broadcast of an independent filmaker’s investigation of the global climate denial movement.  The Judge threw it out.

Haven’t seen the film yet, the trailer looks interesting.  If Monckton doesn’t like it, it must be good.

For the record, Abraham is the scientist Monckton says looks like an “overcooked prawn”.

Abraham. Prawn. Monckton. You decide.
