Drowning in Oil

This links to a stunning series of photos of a recent oil spill in China.  Go take a look. I’ll wait.

The spill was tiny compared to our own Gulf of Mexico disaster, but underscores how this phenomenon has been going on in the third world with horrifying frequency, ignored by most of the media until our recent experience sensitized us to what is happening.

A spate of recent stories has picked up on the meme, like this one from the New York Times.

And there’s this.

Monday Music Break

Is it ever gonna be enough?

Gold, Guns, Girls – by Metric

We can’t fight the good fight without good music.

I’m going to start adding some to this blog. I’m open to suggestions. This first one came from Kimberley Thee, who hosted the short lived “Climate TV” interview series that I participated in this past spring. Kim is now working on a new project at http://www.socialcyclone.org/, which uses the track above as part of the background music. Looks like something worth watching….

The Mind of the Denier

Former White House attorney John Dean discusses research on the authoritarian mind, and in doing so, sheds light on the impenetrable, hermetically sealed logic loop that is climate denialism.

It happens that I came across another piece tonight from the Boston Globe, How Facts Backfire, that also discusses how science uncovers disquieting truths about democracy, media, and the mind.

“In the end, truth will out. Won’t it?

Maybe not. Recently, a few political scientists have begun to discover a human tendency deeply discouraging to anyone with faith in the power of information. It’s this: Facts don’t necessarily have the power to change our minds. “

National Security – Part 2

Climate Deniers align themselves with those that would keep us on the cycle of boom and bust, terror and war, shortage and famine.

Our continued dependence on fossil fuels compromises the security of every nation.

Climate Deniers align themselves with those that would keep us on the cycle of boom and bust, terror and war, shortage and famine.

But the world is waking up, and the professionals who take a clear eyed view of the scientific realities are leading the way.

Monckton – Stung by Abraham, Embarrasses himself further

He goes on, true to form, to make veiled threats, and promises “hundreds” of countering questions to Abraham.

Stung by John Abraham’s devastating takedown, “Lord” Christopher Monckton offered an incoherent, rambling, pointless reply.

Accusing Dr Abraham of being “well funded” (not), presumably by the invisible global communist conspiracy that is at the heart of his lordship’s worldview, Monckton further claims that citing his own website as a peer reviewed source meets the standard in scientific debate. He then goes on, true to form, to make veiled threats, and promises “hundreds” of countering questions to Abraham.  If you haven’t seen Dr. Abraham’s takedown, stop everything now, make popcorn, and go here.

Now Dr Abraham has replied in detail to Monckton’s ravings. Continue reading “Monckton – Stung by Abraham, Embarrasses himself further”

Thanks to All Who pitched in to Win!

With an unbelievable surge during the last 24 hours, a colorful crew of the world’s most popular and influential YouTubers helped me not only win, but smash the record for voting and organizing in this contest.

With the help of thousands of good people all across the Planet, Climate Denial Crock of the Week won the Brighter Planet Competition.

BrigherPlanet.com is a great organization that is making grants to worthy online projects related to climate change. For the 2 week voting period from may 1 to may 15, Climate Denial Crock of the Week was among the contestants for a 5000 dollar grant.

With an unbelievable surge during the last 24 hours, a colorful crew of the world’s most popular and influential YouTubers, led by DPRJones, participated in a blogtv webathon, that lasted 10 hours, spanned 10 time zones, and brought in the votes that not only put Climate Crocks on top, but smashed the record for votes in this competition. I am still reeling at the sheer, bloody minded generosity and endurance of DPR and all those who pitched in, including ZOMGitscriss, Thunderf00t, factvsreligion, ScouseCaspaXS,. and many others. The story of this heart expanding, trans-oceanic meeting of strangers would make a great little movie.
