  1. Note that the direction of the wind flow is the problem. On the Haleakalā lobe of Maui, for instance, the east side of the volcano typically gets over 300 inches of rain annually (beautiful waterfalls), while the west side, in the normal rain shadow, typically gets 13 inches of rain (resorts and golf courses).
