Kimmel’s Back, and So is Offshore Wind

Mark the calendar. Turning point.

Reuters:

Danish offshore wind developer Orsted (ORSTED.CO), opens new tab can restart work on the nearly finished Revolution Wind project off the coast of Rhode Island, a federal judge ruled on Monday, after President Donald Trump’s administration halted the project last month.

The ruling is a legal setback for Trump, who has sought to block expansion of offshore wind in U.S. waters. It is a palpable victory for Orsted, which has been losing $2 million a day since the project was halted on August 22.

Revolution Wind is located 15 miles off the coast. Once completed, it is expected to produce enough electricity to power 350,000 homes in Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Orsted’s U.S.-listed shares were up nearly 9% at $11.60 following the ruling by U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth.

The U.S. Interior Department said it would continue to review the project while work proceeds.

“As a result of the Court’s decision today, Revolution Wind will be able to resume construction as BOEM (the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management) continues its investigation into possible impacts by the project to national security and prevention of other uses on the Outer Continental Shelf,” an Interior spokesperson said.

Washington Post:

Jimmy Kimmel will return to television Tuesday, nearly one week after Disney-owned ABC took his long-running late-night talk show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” off the air under pressure from the Trump administration, station owners and conservative critics over comments he made after the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.

“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” The Walt Disney Company wrote in a statement Monday. “It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

  1. I heard about a campaign on reddit where people were told to cancel their subscriptions to Disney+ (apparently so many people did this it crashed Disney’s servers). Anyway, this is the only tool available in capitalism. You’ve got to hurt them in the pocket book.

      1. Disney/ABC itself was primarily spineless. The Kimmel decision was really driven by the Sinclair Broadcast Group, which holds the most ABC local stations. They announced they won’t carry Kimmel – in fact, they still won’t air Kimmel’s show tonight. They’re going to extract something from Kimmel and/or ABC to start showing him again.

ABC saw Sinclair cancelling him and browned their pants. (In addition to worrying about the upcoming merger.)

Sinclair has a long history of politically conservative positions. Dan Rather called them Orwellian in 2018, and Kimmel went after them as well – so they also have some personal history there:

Their CEO is a Canadian, so go figure – I’d have to look into more as to why they’re conservative.

        1. Both Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group own ABC affiliate stations so were putting pressure on ABC which is owned by Disney. They are currently restricted from owning more than 39% in their respective local markets, so would need FCC approval to exceed this number. On top of that, Disney is attempting to purchase the NFL Network which also requires FCC approval. So these large companies were not going to allow the comments from a comedian to interfere with their corporate profits. IMHO, Orwell never saw this capitalism slant.

  2. i believe that Kimmel filed a significant lawsuit against his employers and coupled with people canceling subscriptions and the likelihood of another legal loss, they caved… they may also have realized that Kimmel off the air is a martyr and Kimmel on the air is less risky… just like Kirk is of probably greater value to trump as a martyr than as a speaker.. hate to say it but that is the way he is acting…

    1. Bear in mind that Kimmel has a lot of staff, the musicians, the booth, the schedulers, and so forth. That cancellation was basically firing all of the people who support the show.
