Someone should also tell them about this https://grist.org/climate/this-new-machine-churns-out-carbon-storing-biochar-on-the-cheap/ as all that biomass left over after harvesting the maize could be cheaply converted to biochar which when they use their new machine to dig a deep trench the biochar could be added and the increase in soil aeration, nutrient, water absorption, and better micro-organism growth, would increase their yields yet again.

I loved the reference to the simple mechanical nature of the solar “ditch witch” making it easier to understand and repair in the field.
