There was also a 2 MW wind turbine on Grandpa’s Knob in Vermont in the 40s.
Have to wonder about the sanity of a “civilization” that would keep pursuing ever more deadly and dirty fossil fuels without putting any effort into such promising and obviously far more benign technology, letting it languish because of price, and fealty to an abstract idea of the principles and philosophy of the psychopath (aka capitalism) as the single most important guiding force in the culture.
Look, the water comes out of the tap, the food is on the grocery store shelves, and everybody tanks up at a gas station to get around.

Look! Climate catastrophe is already disrupting global cohesion, killing millions every year and accelerating exponentially, and wiping out species at 100 times the background rate., also accelerating.
Look! The US is virtually a fascist pseudo-theocracy headed toward some strange steampunk combo of the 12th and 18th centuries. Shortages and price increases caused by the climate crisis have been worsening for years, egregiously under-reported and and almost completely unnoticed and unconnected to the cause by a public too concerned with the latest reality show and the latest right wing nutcase conspiracy theory. Most people and both parties in the US seem to be quite happy to pay for an ethnic group they don’t like to be wiped off the face of the Earth. But it’s hardly a surprise; they’ve had lots of practice ignoring racial genocide-by-scapegoating, -poverty, -malnutrition, -disease, -chemical exposure, -climate-&-ecological-wasting-disease, and other means. Yeah, the world’s just fine.
I mean as long as rich white men are OK, or can convince themselves somebody’s taking care of it, what could there possibly be to worry about?
