Carlson: “Nuclear weapons are demonic, there’s no upside to them at all” Carlson has a point. Consider all the upsides of other weapons. I personally have beaten my swords into plowshares, for example. If you have a few grenades lying around, walla: a new man-cave, a new water well, or a Fourth of July celebration they’ll never forget. And if there’s one thing the Hippies taught us in the ’60s its that the barrel of a gun makes a great flower vase! So many upsides from the other weapons, yet, for nuclear weapons, no upside at all. Clearly this must be the work of the demon-haunted world.
Not so – under the ‘Megatonnes to Megawatts’ deal, Russia blended down enough enriched uranium to make about 20,000 warheads, and sold it to the US to fuel power reactors. It made about 10% of all the electricity generated there for twenty years, carbon free. They had an agreement to each use about the same amount of weapons-grade plutonium for power as well. Russia built sodium-cooled fast reactors (like Bill Gates’ Kemmerer project, but bigger) for the purpose, but the US couldn’t get their act together, and the deal fell through.
