Music Break: Lana Del Rey – Video Games

Lyrics:

Swinging in the backyard
Pull up in your fast car
Whistling my name

Open up a beer
And you say, “Get over here
And play a video game”

I’m in his favourite sundress
Watchin’ me get undressed
Take that body downtown

I say, “You the bestest”
Lean in for a big kiss
Put his favourite perfume on
Go play your video game

It’s you, it’s you, it’s all for you
Everything I do
I tell you all the time
Heaven is a place on earth with you
Tell me all the things you wanna do
I heard that you like the bad girls
Honey, is that true?

Taking Odds: Will Beryl’s Beastly Self Be Reborn?

National Hurricane Center’s 5 pm guidance alluded to a more northerly swing in Beryl’s path, which would mean more hours over very, very, warm water, with, as Jeff Berardelli noted on X (above) – less wind shear to disrupt the storm.
With the incidence of rapid intensification so amplified in the last decade or so, how legit is the concern that Beryl could blow back up into Her more beastly self?

National Hurricane Center guidance from 5 pm ET July 5.
I’ve set it to start at the point where Dr. Michael Brennan speaks about Beryl’s path and the prospect of re-strengthening.

AI Hungry for Electricity, Thirsty for Cooling Water

Does Microsoft have the answer?

Data Center Dynamics:

Microsoft has more than 20GWs of renewable energy under contract, the company revealed in a previously unreported job listing.

Yesterday, it was reported that Microsoft has more than 5GW of data center capacity in operation and expects to add 1GW of server power over the next six months, followed by 1.5GW of new data center capacity in the first half of 2025.

The company is also considering developing a $100 billion ‘Stargate’ supercomputer with OpenAI that could consume 5GW on its own when it reaches full capacity by 2030.

Renewable energy contracts can take years to develop and last even longer. Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) are often financing the development of a project, so long-term agreements – 10 years is not uncommon.

DCD has exclusively reported on Microsoft’s efforts to hire nuclear experts to build an SMR and microreactor strategy for its data centers. It has also signed a speculative energy agreement with Helion Energy to procure fusion power by 2028.

Don’t Talk Down to Kids About Climate

Nice that CBS News is thinking about it, but the “expert” they interview has only weak-sauce answers.
Kids are right to feel seething anger. Giving them something positive to work on is a great idea, but I don’t think bike lanes are going to get to the root of that overwhelming anxiety.
From my perspective, having spent a lot of time at local meetings where these issues are discussed – having young people show up and give an informed perspective on why they are concerned, and what the solutions should be, would be impactful. I’ve only seen it once, but it made an impression.
