Did Thwaites survive the Eemian when CO2 maxed out at 300ppm and Southern Hemisphere insolation was lower? Thwaites was doomed 100 years ago, it is just taking some time.
But the models! The models that clearly don’t include those newly discovered crevasses and tunnels that will make the loss quicker.
Are you saying that Thwaites would have been eaten by warming ocean water without the increase of heat-trapping gases?
Dr James Hanson stated a long time ago that the absolute maximum that MIGHT be safe for the ice sheets was 350ppm CO2. Given that the ice sheets are slow to respond going above that for a short period was not a problem if it went back down again fairly quickly. The threshold for the Pine Island Thwaites complex is inevitably lower. We are now into the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is doomed levels. And a big chunk of the Greenland Ice sheet (GIS).
Insolation in the Northern Hemisphere is lower that in the Eemian, so no idea how much of the GIS is already doomed.
So: absolutely heat trapping gases that are the problem, just that it has been a problem far longer than we care to admit.
Didn’t Eric Rignot not state almost 10 years ago that the West Antarctic is “already sort of doomed”. It would seem the only real debate now is how long or how soon.
Recent reports of the past week are making a big deal about this but we’ve known since 2014 it would happen & there’s likely nothing that can stop it except a prolonged extreme cooling that would also doom most of humanity
