It was always a huge mistake to be plotting the derivative and 2nd derivative and even the 3rd derivative of the number of cases. People hate calculus. Dropping the rate of acceleration of cases is a long way from fixing the problem.
I have a similar complaint about spreading graphs of mean global sea level rise. While it might be useful metric to some, most people coastal people should be concerned about their local SLR, especially if it is greater than the global mean.
If you have Calculus complaints there’s a “Murray Salby” who claims that the 2nd derivative of any function must equal its 3rd derivative (demonstrated with Keeling curve & emissions plots). Don’t sound right to me but I did that at school 58 years ago & memory fades. Far more interesting regonal sea level anomaly shows that the warming Atlantic Ocean is strengthening ENSO since 1995 AD and that must have biggish consequences.
Simple counterexample:
I’m driving at a constant speed v down the street, so charting
Distance/time (steadily increasing) is flat line with slope v
Speed/time (constant) is a horizontal line of value v.
Accelation/time (none) is a horizontal line at y=0
Well I still think the warming Atlantic Ocean strengthening ENSO since 1995 AD is far more interesting, and I’m not just trying to change the subject, but I do think you beat Murray with your fancy schmancy Calculus example.
