Music Break: Anais Mitchell w Greg Brown – Why We Build the Wall

Lyrics:

[HADES]
Why do we build the wall, my children, my children?
Why do we build the wall?

[ALL TOGETHER]
Why do we build the wall?
We build the wall to keep us free
That’s why we build the wall
We build the wall to keep us free

[HADES]
How does the wall keep us free, my children, my children?
How does the wall keep us free?

[ALL TOGETHER]
How does the wall keep us free?
The wall keeps out the enemy
And we build the wall to keep us free
That’s why we build the wall
We build the wall to keep us free

[HADES]
Who do we call the enemy, my children, my children?
Who do we call the enemy?

[ALL TOGETHER]
Who do we call the enemy?
The enemy is poverty
And the wall keeps out the enemy

And we build the wall to keep us free
That’s why we build the wall
We build the wall to keep us free

[HADES]
Because we have and they have not, my children, my children
Because they want what we have got

[ALL TOGETHER]
Because we have and they have not
Because they want what we have got
The enemy is poverty
And the wall keeps out the enemy
And we build the wall to keep us free
That’s why we build the wall
We build the wall to keep us free

[HADES]
What do we have that they should want, my children, my children?
What do we have that they should want?

[ALL TOGETHER]
What do we have that they should want?
We have a wall to work upon
We have work and they have none
And our work is never done

My children, my children
And the war is never won
The enemy is poverty
And the wall keeps out the enemy
And we build the wall to keep us free
That’s why we build the wall
We build the wall to keep us free
We build the wall to keep us free

  1. This song is new to me, and it’s like it was written yesterday. What’s absolutely stunning is to find it’s nearly 10 years old. The album was released in March 2010, but she was singing it in concert almost a year earlier, in May 2009.

I’m blown away. Thank you so much for posting this.

    1. “Donald Trump 2016: “Build that wall!””

Since we’ve given up on getting Mexico to pay for it, we’re now calling it Steel Slats ™

  2. I was listening to a most incongruous cover of a late 50s classic when I decided to see if Peter had posted a Music Break of late. A most timely selection indeed.

As for what I was watching on the ‘Tube?
A barefoot Norwegian prodigy of Iranian-Japanese descent whose range and impossibly husky voice allows her to knock off jazz & blues standards like she learned them in the womb

Here’s Angelina Jordan Astar channeling Screamin’ Jay Hawkins in “I Put a Spell on You”:

        1. No, we have a mindless, gutless, ignorant, and stupid DOG hater in our midst, one who puts a thumbs down on EVERY comment I make, even those that are merely correcting a typo or math error.

I say “stupid” because they often make mistakes like hitting you too by accident or missing some of my comments. They saw your last comment and changed the thumb down to a thumb up, not being smart enough to realize that your comment and my response would stand forever for all to see. LMAO! (I put the thumb down back so that people wouldn’t get confused—-my real feeling about your post is still WOW)

So, even though it was an error made in stupidity, welcome to the club—-I actually consider it a small badge of honor that I have so upset one of the cretins—small because it’s hardly better than beating up on a dull child.
