The bleeps are part of the Emergency Weather Service Announcement!
I live in the Valley above Los Angeles.
One of those emergency announcements actually went off on my cellphone a few days ago at 3 o’clock in the morning, warning me not to attend areas of the city known to flood. I do live a mile or two down the road from something called the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Preserve which is a rather low area of the Valley, housing water foul and other water based species, whose closest road on its perimeter – a major road that runs across the Valley – does flood when lots of rain is dumped upon it….
But I didn’t see any ‘Day After Tomorrow’ like action, so I went to bed.
Actually, we do get twisters from time to time in Southern Cal. They are typically F0 “glorified dust devils” in strength. Weak, but when they meet up with Southern California construction (earthquake resistant, but not necessarily storm resistant), they can do real damage.
One “hot-spot” for tornado activity is the region between Riverside and Temecula. The topography there seems to induce the kind of wind-shear needed to “spin up” tornadoes. That plus the fact that there are some right-wing white-supremacist types out there makes it our “Little Mississippi”.
A few years ago we missed getting hit by a tornado that crossed I-15 by just a few minutes. It was strong enough to flip some empty train boxcars on their side.
Also, I remember seeing three waterspouts just off the coast of Point Loma back in the early 1980’s.
Parts of Southern California have a “tornado density” similar to parts of the Midwest. It’s just that our tornadoes are almost always the weak F0 types that nobody in Tornado Alley would be impressed with.
Ha, ha – part of the footage greenman posted above made it onto the BBC video in your link. The guy wasn’t kidding when he said he was going to get paid for his video….
I think everyone is seeing that. If you click on “technical details,” you get the explanation:
“climatecrocks.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for the following names: *.wordpress.com, wordpress.com ”
This is a server misconfiguration on the part of WordPress. I’m not sure if Peter can do anything about it. Maybe complain to WordPress, assuming that you can reach a human rather than just a computer that sends you to a FAQ that has no useful facts.
Thanks for the reply Cy. I did see the explanation message as well, but I had no idea what was going on. I wasn’t all that concerned at first, but I never take anything for granted when it comes to internet security.
