I’ve had my LEAF for over two years. Best car I have ever owned. Boring? I don’t think so. Go back and drive it. 0 to 60 in less than nine seconds with the instant torque–no gears or transmission to slow you down. A real kick to drive.

I haven’t seen one myself but from the video posted on this site some weeks ago, I agree with you…the Tesla S looks like the iPad of the electric cars. Not boring at all.
The interior is amazing and perhaps if I had the money to buy one, I’d also have the money to change the steering wheel in something out of the Jetsons…
My next door neighbor was having a pool party for his upper class friends
(I wasn’t invited 🙁 ) ,and one of his rich buddies arrived in a Tesla S.
During the course of the party, he would take the other guests for a spin in the car,and they all looked like they were coming off of a fun carnival ride at the end of the drive.
Ironic moronic comments. The EV mfrs are going out of their way to make their products as similar to existing ICE (boring) as possible. Why? Marketing shows them that greater sales volume with the familiar. Anything new is risky. Not what everyone wants, but it is what they buy. Nissan and other mfrs have been making the same square box with four wheels for 100 years. Nobody wants to try something new and risky. Just making an EV is risky enough. Jetsons steering would be the biggest flop since the Edsel. How about a push button hydraulically controlled automatic? Headlights that turn when the wheels turn? The talking car? Center mounted display? Duds. Really, buyers want boring. Look at the top selling autos and tell me they don’t want boring. Ur advice is the shortest route to bankruptcy. Good thing they are not so foolish.
You have a point, but don’t forget that the first generation Prius looked nothing like what the do today. It was a rounded bean-like sedan with little tires. They didn’t really take off until they had the distinctive Prius shape. People want something different, but not too different. The Aptera was a great car, but had crossed the line on being too different.
I drive a 2012 Nissan Leaf. The most distinctive aspect in the vein you’re taking about is probably the shifter, which should more properly be called a drive selector. That’s the one thing that has to be briefly explained to new drivers.

To answer your on topic question, the first cars were essentially horse drawn carriages with a motor, much as the Leaf is configured much like an ordinary ICE vehicle . No, they didn’t have cardboard horses, but many constituencies required someone with a flag to precede them because of fears of scaring horses.
