Good point about the oil going through, not to America. We’re supposed to take on the risk of spills so that an oil company can transport tar sands oil through the USA and cause gas prices in the midwest to rise. I’m having a hard time seeing how that benefits the USA.
If people knew the facts about Keystone, nobody would support it.

This is ecocide in biblical proportions, how can they possibly fulfil the obligation to restore the land to its former state?
If this amount of investment went into renewables instead, America could make a big leap to carbon neutrality and lead the world. It will have to happen anyway in the not too distant future, so why not start now?
Canada’s anti-conservation Conservative government may be content to commit legislaticide (i.e. repeal all kinds of environmental legislation) and turn Canada into a Third World country (i.e. dependent of exports of its non-renewable resources) – they may even be able to delude themselves that what they are doing is not treating Canada as if it were a business in liquidation – but… the USA does not have to help them do it!
President Obama may have temporarily stopped the Keystone XL pipeline for the wrong reason but, the Fossil Fuel Lobby is not about to re-invent itself as the Green Energy Fan Club so, I really do hope that Americans (US and Canadians) are ready for a long fight.
In earlier times you had to invest one barrel of oil to extract 200 barrels. Tar sand oil needs a barrel of oil for just five barrels gained.
