Marc Morano Interview: “We may lose the war in the end”

I bumped into Marc Morano early on at last week’s Heartland Institute Denia-palooza. Much to my surprise, despite the fact I’ve lambasted him a number of times in videos,  he readily agreed to an interview. A fixture on the Fox News/right wing radio anti science circuit, former advisor to Senator James Inhofe, or as I like to call him, Senator “I’m not in denial but there have never been any gay people in my family” Inhofe, Morano touched on a variety of topics, but a particular message came thru, which he repeated in his address to the group later in the day.

That is, he does not trust Mitt Romney.

Well, there – something we have in common.

More than that, Morano expressed concern to me, and to the group, that the climate denial side could have won many battles but still “lose the war”, if the EPA is successful in promulgating CO2 regulations, and if Romney were elected and reverted to views he has claimed to hold in the past on climate change. (see post below)

There was quite a bit more to the interview, which I may post in coming days.

By the way, if you want to give Morano, and Heartland, even more to worry about, consider signing the “Push Button, Save Planet’ Petition from Climate Reality – which will send a message to President Obama, supporting the EPA’s regulation of carbon pollution.

  1. Ahr Ahr…what’s the point of accusing Inhofe of denial on gays if you then push the extremely silly ideas that (a) pushing a button can save the planet (b) there is a planet to save (as if AGW were going to blow it up) (c) EPA regulations will do anything measurable on climate even in the most alarmists scenarios (d) Obama will sign them in any differently than Clinton about Kyoto.

More like “push button, empty gesture”.

A word for Morano: EPA regulations will mean, like in Europe, a transfer of money from the poor to the rich.

    1. Are you referencing the “push button, save the planet” petition from Climate Reality? Anyway, nobody believes the planet will blow up. EPA regulations, if properly executed, will do something measurable to mitigate climate change. I have never seen any evidence that Europe has experienced wealth transfer from poor to rich due to greenhouse gas reduction methods, any credible reference on that?

In a nutshell, it boils down to finding a mitigation plan that works. There are credible organizations (such as NAS, etc) that indicate targets for emissions reductions are necessary and achievable. So, we in the USA shall attempt to formulate a plan to meet those targets.

It still seems to come down to your insistence that mitigation is all but impossible. Let’s say hypothetically we had to meet a 50% reduction in emissions by 2050 (and 100% gone by 2100, roughly similar to one of the IPCC scenarios). If we did not meet this target, the world would hypothetically blow up, taking all of humanity with it. Ridiculous scenario, sure, but what type of plan and technologies would you employ in order to meet these targets such that everything is a done in a way that is satisfying to you?

      1. It is strange that “pushing buttons” should come up. Since so much was made out of the Heartland bill board I must inquire which a sane person would find to be more offenseive, the bill board or the video I present at the end of this comment.

The alarmist got their bloomers in a knot over this bill board that Heartland put up in Chicago and, yes Ted does believe in AGW as well as Charles Manson.

When this was going around on YouTube we didn’t seem to hear much out cry about any of the less than appealing “messages” that the alarmist were telling even children or who ever would listen.

        EPIC GREEN FAIL!!!!

Take a look at Ted and then these videos and see which you think is the most offensive.

    2. A lack of enforced regulation has always meant that some few get rich off the backs of poor people, sometimes locally, sometimes overseas, frequently both.
It’s happened throughout history and it’s happening now.

  2. This interview shows just how out of touch with reality climate deniers truly are. It would seem Mr. Morano really believes all the stuff about a “warmist” conspiracy. Probably a lot of the attended of that conference believe they are the good guys.

Global warming will not destroy the planet but it could destroy our world as we know it today. That is if nothing is done to stop it from getting worse. Saving the Planet is only a metaphor. Mainly, GW will make maintaining our civilization much more difficult. So what we would really be saving is our way of life.

  3. Deniers will unquestionably lose the war because they’re fighting against reality. The only question is whether it will happen too late for us to avoid the worst climate change impacts.

They already have lost the war in terms of EPA GHG regulations, unless Morano thinks he can get them reversed or something.

  4. My Dear Senator Inhofe gets away with saying any wild thing he wants …So do these people get together and say what the talking points are and just blab away ,no matter if it is the truth or not? They must keep the oil, coal gas and nukes going ..Inhofe talking about getting Joseph Kony in Uganda is a slick way of getting troops into Uganda for oil..

    1. I watched the video of the stamens that Morano made and I never heard him lie to this degree: “In Kaktovik, an Arctic village, I visited a 70-year-old Inupiat man who showed me the ice cellar that had been in his family for generations. Today, it doesn’t stay cold enough for him to store meat. Instead, a big General Electric freezer is sitting on his porch. My god, we’re now selling freezers to the Eskimos!”  M. Sanjayan
      http://www.afar.com/afar/m-sanjayan-natures-guardian

It took all of two minutes to come up with the information below and from just a quick appraisal of it and from my 14 years of experience from living 140 miles north of the arctic circle above Kotzebue, AK.; (at total of 24 years in Alaska) what M. Sanjayan, Wildlife Program at the University of Montana claims above is not the truth and if you can’t be trusted to tell the truth about something as simple and easy to verify as this, then when and regarding what will M. Sanjayan prove to be an honest and therefore, trustworthy scientist that one could feel comfortable quoting about anything?

The chart below certainly shows that the old Inupiat man’s meat would have kept as well, if not better, in 2012 because during that year the mean temperature was -19.0 F. We don’t take into consideration that this meat pit dug into the permafrost that the polar bears had probably raided to the point that the poor old Inupiat man felt that the General Electric freezer sitting on his porch is a lot better than fighting a polar bear to get to his meat.

I know from my experiences in the arctic that it can, on occasion, get very warm but it does not last for long, as the chart below shows.

Past Monthly Weather Data for Kaktovik, AK [Alaska] (“Barter Island (dew)”) : JANUARY, 1947 – 2012

“The National Weather Service, the official weather reporting and recording agency of the federal government reported 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C) at Fort Yukon on June 27, 1915, as the highest recorded temperature in the state. The lowest recorded temperature was minus 80 degrees F (-62.8 degrees C) at Prospect Creek, about 25 miles southeast of Bettles, on January 23, 1971.”

As Thomas Huxley famously stated: “The great tragedy in science: the slaying of a beautiful hypothesis by an ugly fact.” and it seems that the fact is that there doesn’t seem to be an “earth with a fever” now any more than there was in 1985 or for Alaska, where obviously Kaktovik is located. It is interesting to note the fever that the earth must have been experiencing was in 1915 at Fort Yukon. We sure would not want to talk about that, would we?

  5. Maurizio, You’d have had one more like, mine, if you’d have stopped typing after “what’s the point of accusing Inhofe of denial on gays”

  6. Morana is delusional of course- the numbers do not lie- as C02 rises rapidly and times passes- we are setting ourselves up or a massive disaster.

  7. How about looking at a few facts.

All 5 main temperature records show quite clearly that the world has not warmed significantly for the last 10 to 15 years. Over the last 2 years, it has showed signs of cooling. At the same time, carbon dioxide rose steadily and the climate models continued to tell us that it should be warming rapidly. Why were they so wrong?

A few years ago a senior IPCC scientist said that models could not be expected to be right over a two-year timeframe. Then he extended it to 10 years. Now he says that he has a “expectation” that during the next few decades the world will warm as predicted. Not exactly convincing!

The fact is that world temperatures go in cycles and we are just over the crest of one cycle. There is heaps of evidence indicating that the world is heading for cooling which could be more or less severe.

In spite of predictions of computers, sea levels are not rising at any abnormal rate, arctic ice is more or less normal and Antarctic ice is increasing slowly. Glaciers are continuing to retreat the rate of retreat since the end of Little ice age.

      1. This whole video is a CROCK. Let’s tell the truth, for a change.

Several ships and more than 1,000 crew got stuck in arctic ice off the coast of Russia after the sea froze over!
Rescuers have used a huge icebreaker to free two of the ships from the Sea of Okhotsk, but a smaller icebreaker also got stuck in the ice for several hours.
Three other ships that are still stuck have been there since 30 December!
Rescuer Captain Antokhin said: “The ice is very serious, frozen in layers, covered in snow and hard to pass through. It sticks onto the ship.”

    1. “arctic ice is more or less normal”

On which planet? Not this one.

New research from last week 17/2012

“Impact of anthropogenic climate change is observable in Arctic sea ice already today

Observations reveal external driver for Arctic sea-ice retreat – Notz & Marotzke (2012)
We find that the available observations are sufficient to virtually exclude internal variability and self-acceleration as an explanation for the observed long-term trend, clustering, and magnitude of recent sea-ice minima. Instead, the recent retreat is well described by the superposition of an externally forced linear trend and internal variability. For the externally forced trend, we find a physically
plausible strong correlation only with increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration.
Our results hence show that the observed evolution of Arctic sea-ice extent is consistent with the claim that virtually certainly the impact of an anthropogenic climate change is observable in Arctic sea ice already today.”

NASA: Earth Is Losing Half A Trillion Tons Of Ice A Year

“About a quarter of the (global) average annual ice loss came from glaciers and ice caps outside of Greenland and Antarctica
Ice loss from Greenland and Antarctica and their peripheral ice caps and glaciers averaged 385 billion tons (100 cubic miles) a year. ”

      {read at Climate Progress}

      ——————————-

Max Planck Institute for Meteorology news release.

“The ongoing rapid retreat of Arctic sea ice is often interpreted as the canary in the mine for anthropogenic climate change. In a new study, scientists have now systematically examined the validity of this claim. They find that neither natural fluctuations nor self-acceleration can explain the observed Arctic sea-ice retreat. Instead, the recent evolution of Arctic sea ice shows a strong, physically plausible correlation with the increasing greenhouse gas concentration. For Antarctic sea ice, no such link is found – for a good reason.

In the Arctic Ocean, the ice is virtually locked by the surrounding land masses, and its extent is primarily governed by its melting and freezing. Therefore, greenhouse gases play such an important role up in the high North.
In the Antarctic, by contrast, the sea ice is free to drift around in the open Southern Ocean. Hence, the ice extent there is primarily governed by the prevailing wind patterns. “
