  1. Weather is whack everywhere.

In NZ we have had such long stretches of rain and cloud my solar PV was down ~60% last summer, greenhouse tomato growers had to abandon a whole cycle because there was not enough light to grow and ripen fruit before they needed to get the next cycle in, a neighbour helped harvest 12Ha of broccoli of which only 7% was saleable, the rest had a stem rot because they couldn’t get the tractors on the soaking fields to spray for fungi and bacteria and my land has been saturated so long that there were no field mushrooms in autumn, I think the soil biology has been seriously damaged.

Meanwhile, even the RW nutters are demanding to know why “managed retreat” plans are taking so long as we deal with major coastal slips and mudlsides, floods, silt inundation and some deaths.

And NOW, whatever the hell consequences of the El Nino and Antarctic winter madness. Starting with a second year’s oyster harvest being a bust because, and I quote, “Worst I have seen, and I have been doing it since 1975… a lot of oysters were starving to death, said Calder, … There was minimal phytoplankton in Foveaux Strait for the oysters to feed on during the 2023 season, he said.”

It doesn’t have to be spectacular, or even visible, to be a disaster Earl Mardle Auckland New Zealand
