The Mind of the Denier

Former White House attorney John Dean discusses research on the authoritarian mind, and in doing so, sheds light on the impenetrable, hermetically sealed logic loop that is climate denialism.

It happens that I came across another piece tonight from the Boston Globe, How Facts Backfire, that also discusses how science uncovers disquieting truths about democracy, media, and the mind.

“In the end, truth will out. Won’t it?

Maybe not. Recently, a few political scientists have begun to discover a human tendency deeply discouraging to anyone with faith in the power of information. It’s this: Facts don’t necessarily have the power to change our minds. “

National Security – Part 2

Climate Deniers align themselves with those that would keep us on the cycle of boom and bust, terror and war, shortage and famine.

Our continued dependence on fossil fuels compromises the security of every nation.

Climate Deniers align themselves with those that would keep us on the cycle of boom and bust, terror and war, shortage and famine.

But the world is waking up, and the professionals who take a clear eyed view of the scientific realities are leading the way.

Monckton – Stung by Abraham, Embarrasses himself further

He goes on, true to form, to make veiled threats, and promises “hundreds” of countering questions to Abraham.

Stung by John Abraham’s devastating takedown, “Lord” Christopher Monckton offered an incoherent, rambling, pointless reply.

Accusing Dr Abraham of being “well funded” (not), presumably by the invisible global communist conspiracy that is at the heart of his lordship’s worldview, Monckton further claims that citing his own website as a peer reviewed source meets the standard in scientific debate. He then goes on, true to form, to make veiled threats, and promises “hundreds” of countering questions to Abraham.  If you haven’t seen Dr. Abraham’s takedown, stop everything now, make popcorn, and go here.

Now Dr Abraham has replied in detail to Monckton’s ravings. Continue reading “Monckton – Stung by Abraham, Embarrasses himself further”

“It’s BP’s Rules, Not Ours.”

“BP’s Rules, not ours.”
That’s what journalists were told when they were blocked from visiting and filming oil soaked beaches by a boatload of BP thugs – and threatened with arrest. Perhaps it’s time to let BP know who makes the rules in America.

Crock of the Week will be back soon.  Complete coverage of the oil disaster at FireDogLake.

Debunking Lord Monckton, Part Two

A character that seems to leap right out of a Monte Python skit, Lord Monckton is the darling of those who wish desperately to believe the fantasy of climate denial. There’s way more than one video can possibly contain, so a two part series was necessary to even begin to deal with the fountain of disinformation that is Lord Christopher Monckton.

Debunking Lord Monckton, Part One

He’s everywhere on the climate denial circuit.  He’s not a scientist. He’s a classics major and journalist.

How is it that he’s been able to sell himself to climate deniers as their number one spokesman? First, like any good salesman, Lord Monckton knows his customer.

Flogging the Scientists

As a nonscientist, it’s daunting for me to work thru the huge volume of information on global climate change. I’ve found that the most reliable scientific information comes from respected peer reviewed science journals .

But journals have lots of big words, and lots of small print, and very few illustrations to make it easy for me. You can see why climate deniers don’t like them. But that’s where the facts are.

How can you tell a good science journal?
