  1. “If we can be the most mature version of ourselves.”

Umm, how often does that happen? Optimism because it’s the happiest solution isn’t maturity – it’s wishful thinking, at best.

Currently listening to “If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies” by Yudkowsky.

12 days after releasing a major upgrade to Claude, Anthropic today released ANOTHER major upgrade:

The software industry is facing imminent havoc.

  2. As an avid SF reader for over 50 years, I’ve encountered renditions of every apocalyptic or horrifying scenario fiction writers can dream up, including sociopathic or murderous AIs, like Colossus, Hal 9000, Skynet, smart robots, and so forth. However, growing up under the nuclear threat of the Cold War, there were a lot more scenarios involving human screwups triggering Global Thermonuclear War just based on tribal ape behaviors (I’m looking at you, General Ripper).

I’d like to re-align the popular perspective on the dangers of AI by pointing out that their scariest behaviors are already encapsulated by what humans do to each other, from the Holocaust and the Khmer Rouge and the Rwandan genocide to bog-standard dictators running torture prisons, or even just the sociopathy of for-profit corporations externalizing the ecological and humanitarian costs of their operations.
