TV Meteorologist: I am Now an Alarmist

Above, John Morales, long time award winning South Florida meteorologist, becoming famous for his unscripted and visceral reactions to increasingly off the chain storms in the Caribbean.
The clip above should start at about 1:53 for John’s reaction to hurricane Melissa.

Below, former NOAA scientist and IPCC Lead Author Jim Kossin described to me his research confirming that the fingerprints of climate change are now showing up in hurricane data.

  1. It’s always good to get an authentic expert’s point of view, and in this case Morales’s evident sincerity only adds weight to his opinion. I would go along with all of this most emphatically were it not for his choice of vocabulary: John Morales has not become an “alarmist”.

People may call me a hair-splitter but I cleave to the fact that words have meanings, and different words have different meanings. “Alarmist” is the kid who cries ‘Wolf!’ for the pleasure of frightening people; “alarming” applies when the wolf is already there and no one will open their damn eyes to look at it. Using “alarmist” in this way can only muddy the waters for those very people who most need clear information.

Words are our tools and we must keep them sharp.
