Senator Whitehouse: Energy “Emergency” is a Grift

Above, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse on the massive grift of Trump’s “Energy Emergency”.
As I noted in my recent column, that vast sucking sound is money being transferred from ratepayers to the pockets of Trump’s fossil fuel donors.
Long form 22 minute explanation above, short form 3 minute highlights below.

  1. Speaking of lying asses…
Renewable energy is cheaper. Wind and solar and efficiency are the cheapest energy sources of all almost everywhere in the world, and they’re getting even cheaper, fast. The more is built, the faster it gets cheaper.

What utilities and governments do to retail prices is up to them and sometimes to voters. In some places electricity is free; in some it’s subsidized (France); in some, fees are added to pay for things for people and encourage conservation aka efficiency (Germany). But wind, solar and efficiency are the cheapest sources of energy. And yes, they’re also the fastest to deploy.

In this one way, the price doesn’t matter: if we want civilization and millions of species to survive the next century, we have to abandon fossil fuels, and only renewables, efficiency, and wiser lives can replace them, because they’re the cheapest and fastest to deploy (in addition to all their other advantages).

And of course switching to 100% renewables will reduce global energy demand by at least half, with tremendous further savings available through necessary radical economic/political equality (which renewables are part of and party to) and healing the complex psychological complex that causes all our problems. It will take a little longer for some infrastructure and land changes but implementing all those and other programs we can probably reduce global energy use by 90% over the coming decades. That’ll be cheaper.
