Just in time to multiply impact of the trade war farm crisis, drought is causing a low Mississippi for the 4th year in a row, hampering grain shipments to Gulf ports.

Some rain did come thru this week, but drought still applies.

Tangentially related (well, about the lower Mississippi): I recently learned that when the river is riding high (i.e., up against the levees), the Corps of Engineers forbids construction work near the river. That includes all of the shipping and industrial plants along the river, plus cities near the river (e.g., Baton Rouge and New Orleans) and is a major hassle for companies scheduling upgrades and additions. The vibrations and pounding from the equipment can trigger weakening in the levee when the water table is high.
