But the point stands. Rich people who can afford extraordinary adaptive measures, expensive insurance, or even private firefighters, will do just fine in the mean new world.
The rest of us, not so much.
As University of Michigan Business School prof Andy Hoffman told me years ago, “some companies, AIG for example, if you want to have fire insurance in these areas where there are more fires, you actually have to buy into there private firefighter company.
If you’re rich, you can do this, if you’re not, you have a problem.”

I suspect most of the people who lost their homes during these fires would not meet a strict definition of poverty, but clearly not many are prepared to buy into their own private firefighters.
All the more reason to be concerned.
