Climate Scientists on Biggest Stories of 2024

Andrew Dessler and Zeke Hausfather discuss major developments of 2024.
Obviously the election was a giant piece, but not the end of climate action.

As Zeke said, “The world is big, the US is a small part of that, and climate is long, and 4 years is a small part of that.”

Biggest concern might be what the Trump administration will do to American Competitiveness in the age of clean energy.

  1. The discussion was a little bit closeted, tame and restrained in my humble opinion, certainly I wouldn’t make the U.S election the number 1 story, after all the other mega news events that have been reported around the globe during 2024. Surely , progress has to be led by stable business and science, and not reliant on fragile national politics, left and right swings, and 4 years is absolutely nothing in climate terms. The importance of climate stories depend on where you live, how you live, and how affected you are.

    1. Tame & restrained for sure, skimming over the surface of much deeper water. “Clean” energy buildout, infrastructure, price drops, the goal of catching up with China, etc. is spotlighted, but with no attempt to put numbers on the potential for decarbonization or effectiveness in competing with FFs for total energy use. In both cases there is no good news, so best to keep it superficial I guess. Which is all you can do in 17 minutes
