Musk’s MAGA Embrace Driving EV Buyers/Owners Away

A Tesla-owning friend recently expressed frustration at Musk, and noted he had bought a new Ford EV rather than direct more business to Elon.

  1. I got a custom bumper sticker for our Y, “Bought before we knew who he was.” I won’t buy another Tesla, but neither will I buy another ICE vehicle–or chainsaw, or lawnmower, etc. EVs are great, Elon is a horrible person.

  2. This is straight up disinformation.

Tesla is currently trading at $387, nearly 100% rise since last December long before to Musk announcing his support for Trump. Notice you’re not saying anything about the multi-billion tax dollars given away by Biden this week to Rivian for – as far as I can tell – just because it’s not owned by Musk and it’s not called Tesla.
Your tangible hatred for all things Musk – including misinforming your audience about the world’s most renowned electric vehicle manufacturer that is doing more for addressing climate change than all other automotive companies combined – is poisoning your mind from at least respecting and posting what’s true. You need to get a grip.

    1. Maybe the main problem the administration has with Musk is his anti-union fanaticism. (From what I recall, that’s why Tesla doesn’t qualify for most of the IRA & other money.) And his being a right wing asshole who spent enormous amounts of money & time trying to get the mentally ill moron head of a fascist party elected president of the 2nd most important country in the world, all but guaranteeing utter failure of global efforts to prevent ecological catastrophe in this century.

BYD is doing more to prevent it.

    2. Such a reminder that people are stupid, & it’s entirely because of psychology. SISS, Sychologically Induced Stoopidity Syndrome.

It seems to be an effect of what’s said to be the increasing polarization in the us (actually a drive to the extreme right by the Republicans, with the Democrats trundling along behind just a little slower); that group identity has become far more important than reason, consistency, or reality. People will twist their logic into Möbius pretzels to align with the group they wish to be in, or think they are.

      1. group identity has become far more important than reason, consistency, or reality.

That’s basic human tribalism. Sports team fanaticism is a glaring example of that, as are Ford vs. GM fanbases, religious sects, Irish v. Italians in Boston, preferred technology standard, shoe brands, etc.

What are the “reasons” humans go to war? Why are so many sports fans violent?

        1. Many books & articles have been written about it. Here are a few I’ve found insightful about why it’s worse now than it has been for a while:

    3. Tesla is maybe America’s “most renowned electric vehicle maker” because China’s BYD is kicking ass. Nine of the top-selling 20 EV makers are Chinese. Tesla comes in second (with Ford and Jeep at 19th, and 20th, respectively). China is such a threat that we have a 100% tariff on their well-made low-cost models (like the Seagull).
