John Oliver on Trump’s Project 2025: Blueprint for the Death of Democracy

The vast majority of voters have not yet heard of Project 2025.
Your mission, should you accept it (or not) is to make sure absolutely everyone knows about it, and soon.

Buzzfeed has a top 10 most horribles from the 2025 document, here.

Examples:

6. The FBI would no longer be allowed to combat the spread of “misinformation” or “disinformation.”
Project 2025 states: “The United States government and, by extension, the FBI have absolutely no business policing speech, whether in the public square, in print, or online.”

During this current election year, the FBI is already concerned about the spread of misinformation via AI that could influence voters in November.

7. Climate change and renewable energy priorities would be removed from the Department of Agriculture.
Project 2025 states: “The Biden Administration’s vision of a federal government developing a plan that ‘fixes’ agriculture and focuses on issues secondary to food production is very disturbing. The next Administration should: Denounce efforts to place ancillary issues like climate change ahead of food productivity and affordability when it comes to agriculture.”

Media Matters:

The Heritage Foundation’s nearly 900-page policy book, titled Mandate for Leadership: A Conservative Promise, describes Project 2025’s priorities and how they would be implemented, broken down by departments in the federal bureaucracy and organized around “four pillars that will, collectively, pave the way for an effective conservative administration: a policy agenda, personnel, training, and a 180-day playbook.” Written primarily by former Trump officials and conservative commentators connected to The Heritage Foundation, these proposals would severely inhibit the federal government’s protections around reproductive rights, LGBTQ and civil rights, climate change efforts, and immigration.

The initiative is backed by a coalition of over 100 organizations and individuals, at least two-thirds of which receive funding from the Koch network or conservative philanthropist Leonard Leo. The project is also heavily promoted by MAGA-connected media figures such as Steve Bannon, who has called it the “blueprint” for Trump’s second term on his War Room podcast.

  1. Scares the shit out of me and I don’t even live there.

The conservative parties in Ozstralia don’t use the name conservative because of a language difference.
Def: Conservative: Recalcitrant old fart who cannot handle change.

  2. Here’s the John Oliver direct video for those without Twitter. I’ve started it at minute 7:

  3. 6. The FBI would no longer be allowed to combat the spread of “misinformation” or “disinformation.”
Project 2025 states: “The United States government and, by extension, the FBI have absolutely no business policing speech, whether in the public square, in print, or online.”

That is straight forward 1st Amendment stuff. Battling “misinformation” is not the FBI’s job. It’s john Oliver’s, MSNBC’s, Fox News’, The Heartland Institutes’, … etc. If the president, members of congress or any other government official thinks something is “misinformation”, they can issue a statement, hold a press conference or such stuff. They certainly have a platform.

    1. The FBI tracks threats to the country – that’s its job. Say a foreign country tries to influence U.S. elections with widescale misinformation about a particular candidate, or uses AI to send out messages that deceive millions of Americans? These are NOT threats? The only way one could possibly think this is okay is if their particular political beliefs are the ones that tend to get supported by misinformation.

Let’s reverse the coin away from misinformation bolstering Q Anon and MAGA. What if the Chinese secretly wanted Biden to win and they started a campaign with a Trump deep fake that showed him in a compromising position?

That isn’t something that should be investigated by the FBI?

What these Project 2025 guys are proposing would deeply weaken the United States – not protect it. We still have a jury system in this country. The FBI is not the SS seizing individuals and summarily executing them. We have many protections for free speech in this country, and that’s a great thing, but democracy also needs watchdogs to survive.
