  1. How unpleasant an evacuation is makes a big difference if the person’s home doesn’t get hit. My father had a bad evacuation experience out of New Orleans for a hurricane that missed a direct hit on the city, and he swore for any future hurricanes he would “go down with the ship.” He stayed for Katrina; my sisters left him two mae wests and got the hell out of Dodge. The ground level floor* flooded over three feet. After several days in the high heat some cops from north Louisiana came by in a boat and ferried him to a bus, which by then was routed to more distant Dallas.

    He evacuated for Gustav in 2008.
