Atwood doesn’t know what she’s talking about. The right in America basically wants to be left alone. The left wants to replace what works with what sounds good.
Slavery was pretty much universal globally, probably because humanity lacked fossil fuels that made human labor replaceable by machines. I don’t think segregation ever worked…. at least after the advent of fossil fuels and the industrial revolution they brought about.
Slavery still exists in a sense, as many people are slaves to their jobs. Centralized energy generation, aka fossil fuel companies, have disproportionate power.
Distributed energy generation will free more people.
