  1. Got an early taste of this in the spring in Lethbridge (southern Alberta), a long way from the fires, we reached 10+ (the maximum on our air quality scale); 200k north, in Calgary, 10+ continued for a good while. Seeing it descending far into the U.S., and now across the Atlantic (after Europe’s fires last year), crop failures in Africa, … with still more extreme events already baked in given the lag in temperature / weather changes due to GHGs, it has become very difficult to maintain even mildly optimistic hopes for our childrens’ futures. Not a reason to give up, but maintaining morale is becoming difficult.

    1. Not a reason to give up, but maintaining morale is becoming difficult.

Not a reason to give up trying to reduce emissions, but there are local reasons to give up trying to preserve communities and habitats that are effectively doomed. We have to do triage. We’ll be doing triage by default anyway, but it’s more responsible to get in front of it. That includes physical and psychological preparation for now-certain loss.
