Pat Robertson: A Deadly Legacy of Climate Denial

TV Evangelist Pat Robertson died this week – one of the primary misleaders for the evangelical community on science and climate change.

Above a small sampling of what millions of Americans have been continually bombarded with in their self enforced information bubble.

  1. Again, don’t speak of the dead unless you can say something good.

    Pat Robertson is dead. Good.

  2. The irony is that Pat’s concern about ‘socialism’ is coming true. Market Capitalism can efficiently connect buyers and sellers in the name of profit, thus solving many problems, but the Market can’t solve problems it can’t see. Pollution has always been one of those areas where you needed to force the Market to recognize the problem, before it would figure out a solution. That always meant attaching a cost to pollution. In the case of carbon pollution, we refused to do that, but that didn’t make the problem go away. Now, to prevent truly catastrophic changes, we’re going to have to embrace corrective measures that rise to the level of ‘socialism’: on behalf of the future and the planet. Just bypass capitalism altogether and order industry to make EVs and solar panels, batteries, etc.

If Robertson, and people like him, hadn’t spent so much of their public megaphone doing what the fossil fuel industry wanted, and preventing carbon pollution from being recognized for what it was, perhaps we wouldn’t be in this fix. So, if such people are now on the hunt for who is responsible for that, they could try looking in a mirror.
