Okay so I’ve played this AAA game numerous times since it first appeared on the PS3 (PlayStation3) then again on the PS4 and now the PS5. Although it is often referred to as “a game”, anyone who has ever played it will know that it is more of an interactive movie with some very emotionally touching parts. Now most of us are probably tired of zombie-based stories but this game/story is based upon a real world fungus known as a Cordyceps which infects the brain of its host for no other reason than to perpetuate its own life cycle. (it can make an infected insect climb higher where it might be consumed by bird, then spread; climbing higher also causes the spores to spread further.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuKjBIBBAL8
Fact: evolution evolved warm-bloodedness in order to limit fungal infections but humans “seem” to be occasionally on the verge of losing this battle (think about the times you’ve noticed a fungal infection or your toenail; or women contracting a vaginal yeast infection). Episode #1 of the HBO program introduces this new twist: climate change enabled Cordyceps to evolve in order to withstand higher temperatures.
