Mike Mann on Australia’s Fires

Dangerous climate change is here now.

Mike Mann is, by chance, on sabbatical in Australia and has a front row seat to an unfolding disaster.

Below, reposting Kevin Trenberth’s explanation of how heat builds in a drought.

Meanwhile, Surfing champion Kelly Slater posted a picture of a charred Joey trapped in barbed wire – below.

  1. “Dangerous climate change is here now.”

So true. Only five years ago I wouldn’t have thought that we could experience it so quickly. This press release is from March 2019 => WMO: State of the Climate in 2018 shows accelerating climate change impacts

    https://sites.google.com/site/irelandclimatechange/wmo-state-of-the-climate-in-2018-shows-accelerating-climate-change-impacts/WMO%20Statement%20on%20the%20State%20of%20the%20Global%20Climate%20in%202018.jpg

It’ll be overhauled in no time again.

  2. I do like that Michael Mann pointed out that there is no “new normal” because the idea of “normal” doesn’t apply any more.

  3. Australia is world’s biggest exporter of coal. And the country is just preparing a new mega project: The Adani’s Carmichael mine which will…

    * Destroy the ancestral lands, waters and cultures of Indigenous people without their consent.
    * Allow 500 more coal ships to travel through the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area every year for 60 years.
    * Get access to 270 billion litres of Queensland’s precious groundwater for 60 years, for free.
    * Risk damaging aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin.
    * Add 4.6 billion tonnes of carbon pollution to our atmosphere

You can express your solidarity with the (Australian) people and take action here => https://www.marketforces.org.au/info/key-issues/theadanilist/

  4. What we can all do that’s useful about the Australian wild fires is to read the document “Proof that CO2 is not the Cause of the Current Global Warming” by Ian C McClintock per:
“(Ian McClintock is a farmer from the south-west of NSW who, like most farmers, takes a very keen interest in the weather, in weather predictions, and for over twenty years has taken a very keen interest in the debate over anthropogenic emissions as an instrument of climate control)”
and then direct our mental meditation waves (pray if you’re in a Religion club) that Instant Karma will indeed strike.

  5. When watching the Michael Mann interview with ABC (Australian Broadcast Corp) take note of the color purple. This addition to meteorological charts happened when temperatures rose so high that red no longer conveyed all the information.

  6. Russia 2010. North and South Americas last year. And now Australia…

=> Doubling down: Researchers investigate compound climate risks

When six plus three equals 13?

Authors of several papers have studied the Russian heatwave as a compound event with land-atmosphere feedback. Authors of a 2016 publication concluded that climate change increases the likelihood of a devastating heatwave by a factor of six. Low soil moisture increases the likelihood by a factor of three. The combined effect of drought and climate change raises the probability of such a heatwave by a factor of 13.
