  1. Freaky; but Sea-level is farther on down the road. How about: Famine First ? We melted the Arctic and broke the Jet-stream. The Jet-stream is Weather and Weather is Farming. Industrial Society depends on growing grains at scale: Imagine an even more unreliable US Mid-west; this spring was kinda 50%… Wonder how Europe will fare after the Sahara came for its vacation in France… The End of the Age of Shopping ( 4 Billion plane passengers last year ) …The masking of Global Dimming is revealed under that blanket of of 415ppms = record rates of record night-time temps… etc. Meanwhile the Space People are up there laughing their asses off.

    1. Ambient sea level rise may not be an immediate problem as much as increased storm surges, even for storms we have now coming over the critically warmer sea surface temperatures.

  2. So maybe if this continues, SLR will accelerate and all that freshwater streaming off Greenland will interfere with the AMOC, which will definitely accelerate the changes Paul R mentioned. When should we begin to worry? Wait, I know—-the best time to befin to worry about this was 15-20 years ago when ir first became obvious.

    1. I don’t have kids, but I sometimes think about apologizing to the kids next door for how we’ve left the planet.

  3. “If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?”

“Fire and flood apocalypse with wildfires raging and dire threat to Baikal, world’s deepest lake.”

A series of natural disasters are hitting Siberia, with the latest a dire threat from severe flooding to Baikal – the oldest and deepest lake in the worth, containing 20% of the planet’s unfrozen freshwater.

The alert concerns flooding in Baikalsk – where evacuation has begun – and concerns that toxic mudflows can dump poisonous sludge from a former pulp and paper mill into the lake’s pristine maters.

Pools of liquid sludge containing lignin poses a huge threat to the life in Baikal with warnings of an ‘ecological catastrophe’.

‘We can only pray now,” said one campaigner pointing to a risk of a dam burst on the Solzana River where a bride had been swept away already.

  4. Russians demand vast wildfires consuming Siberia be extinguished

More than half a million Russians have demanded the authorities do more to tackle vast wildfires in Siberia that environmentalists have dubbed an ecological catastrophe, but which officials have said would be “pointless” to put out.

    1. Strangely, it is difficult to find video footage of recent Greenland ice melt. Where are the raging rivers?

      1. Possibly due to a lot more small rivers disappearing into moulins(?) and tunnelling under the ice to reach the sea below the glaciers. Not quite the same headliners.

  5. Yes, this year is filled with bad news. Next year will it most likely will be worse. Yet, we will but more carbon into the atmosphere this year then last. We will put more carbon into the atmosphere next year then this year, and so on and so on – until we don’t.

The leap in imagination to a less carbon intensive world is a long one. There are powerful interests that would prefer we don’t change a thing. The path forward is murky at best.

The “free market” forces are winning today, as long as the cost of pollution is paid for by someone else. What will surprise them, if they are even willing to see the truth of it – is that there is no “someone else” in the closed system called earth -and the human thirst to be the most wealthy person on the Titanic is a strong one.

One of the many ironies of our entire human enterprise is that the single minded pursuit of what so many of us thought would keep us safe and secure (wealth accumulation) is what will be our collective downfall.

For decades now every newscast includes an update on the Stock Market. When that is replaced by a daily update on the atmospheric carbon levels – we may have a chance.

By law we’ve allowed the creation of sociopathic organizations with the single purpose of creating “value” for stockholders. By the looks of the things in the USA, those organizations have entirely captured the legislative branch and now the judicial branch of government.

At the moment it looks like nothing can change – but I suspect that soon that will change. If we even have the chance, I still ponder what set of first order principles could lead to a more vibrant, verdant, healthy planet for humans and our companion species…

  6. Alaska’s summer heat has been ‘basically off the charts’

“Usually if you were to break this sort of record, you’d do it by a sliver of a degree,” said Brettschneider. He said the state is on course to shatter the record by more than a degree.

Brettschneider said the combination of relentless high pressure, extremely warm sea surface temperatures related to early sea ice melt, and high humidity are “basically off the charts.”

  7. Talking to a few friends the other nite, the weather was brought up, I commented that June was the hottest June ever recorded, they shrugged and said it was not as hot here as usual. COMPLACENCY is what will take us down.
