Dear Young People, Don’t Vote. Sincerely, Old People

“Climate change? That’s a “you” problem – I’ll be dead soon.”

UPDATE: Newer cut focused on climate.

  1. Dear Peter Sinclair, I read your email postings every day. This one hurt and upset me terribly. I’m surprised that you would post something so nasty and divisive. If this is supposed to be humor, it’s the same kind of “humor” used in every racist, classist, sexist, and homophobic “joke” ever made.

I wrote a comment, but it’s for you, Peter, not for social media. I’m posting it below:

I’m 70 years old. I’ve spent my entire adult life speaking out for and supporting social justice and environmental awareness and the emergence of huge changes that have mattered tremendously. I’ve been educating myself about climate change since 1995, and actively working with several organizations to bring about the deep awareness and transformative changes the human community/society/economy needs in order to maintain a habitable world. I give what money I can, I give my time, I engage my kids and my much-younger coworkers in conversations on the topic. And I vote.

I understand the purpose of this video – and I want you to know how deeply hurtful it felt to watch it and see that thousands of young people will be seeing it and sharing it. When I walk down the street, and you young people see me, who am I to you? Old. White. What do you know of my life and my values?

Do we need ageist polarization added to multiple levels of polarization that is tearing our country apart?? Suzanne

    1. understand your view, however as a baby boomer white male, and part of a group that is overwhelmingly pro-Trump and thus responsible for a a real threat to life on this planet, I’ve been criticizing essentially my own demographic constantly since I’ve been in this.
I get it that many, many older folks are enlightened and working hard for the future – planting trees, as it were, whose shade they will never sit in. I get it, I’m one of them. My parents were very much that to the end of their lives.
Every progressive meeting I go to is well populated with gray hairs.
But the inexplicable and enraging fact is that climate denial, in particular, is a glaring characteristic of the older electorate, along with a raft of other equally despicable views. Without white people over 50, Trump would not be President, in fact, our whole political landscape would be different.
I am ashamed of my cohort, but I’m not confused about who I am, what I do, and why.
I hail your continued activism for a better world, and hope you will continue – but calling out those who deserve to be called out, if sometimes in a snarky, and some would say, offensively blunt manner, has been my mode since I started this.
Humblest apologies to anyone offended, but we all need to grow a thick skin to be involved in the public sphere.
