Could you please explain the significance of this for the non-scientists? No ice seems to be coming out of the Fram Strait yet.
we’re watching large areas open up in the Beaufort sea north of Canada/Alaska, and also north of Scandinavia and Siberia. Given the record low extent, it’s fascinating to see how this possibly record melt is playing out.
In fact winds have been blowing the ice north of Greenland towards Svalbard and the Fram Strait recently. In all the circumstances it is perhaps surprising how little ice there is in the Barents and Greenland Seas at the moment. Perhaps it’s melting faster than it used to?
